Not a mortar shell. A 57mm antitank gun round as clearly shown in the photo. Now, the antitank rounds proper for these things are just inert steel, so no issue for EOD, but there were high explosive rounds also made for the 57mm (6-pounder) guns. So anything is possible and it was a reasonable precaution to bring in these fellows.

The British had 2-inch, 3-inch and 4.2-inch mortars in WWII, each with its range of ammo. You can see one of the 2-inch sorts in use in the last scenes of “Bridge on the River Kwai”. The paratroop version at least looks a lot like a Japanese knee mortar.

I have heard of 50mm (Japan and UK), 60mm (US), 81mm (US, French and UK), 82mm (Russian/Chinese), 90mm (Japanese). , and 120mm rifled (French and US) and smoothbore (everydamnbody) but never a 57mm mortar. There are 57mm antiaircraft guns and the old-timers had 57mm antitank guns in WWII until the tanks outgrew them - but no mortars.

Like I said before, if it was a mortar round, it would be short, fat and have a tail with fins (which would have made it easy to pull out if the perverts didn't try to load it backward).

I did see a guy who caught a 60mm mortar round under skin of his back: the round entered coming straight down, just clipping the guy's helmet and entered his back under his skin, down to the top of his hips. The X-rays showed that the tip of the fuze was almost pushed in, so it was within a hair's breadth of detonating.

That guy's Guardian Angel must have been a muscular sort, because the surgeon got the round out safely.
