Which is the problem with most movies anymore.
Once you strip away the light show where is the core story?
There is nothing there to care about.
Sure, songs and dancing and flashy CGI are fun. So are witty one liners and even visual jokes. But you have to have a story underneath it all.
And that is where they fail.

The story is Romeo&Juliet (Shakespeare). “West Side Story” has the same plot, in all significant ways, and was meant to.
There have also been tons of musical Romeo&Juliet’s in every form. West Side Story is just one of these.
