Despite rave reviews, Steven Spielberg's "West Side Story" has failed to gain traction with audiences at the box office...In its first three weeks in cinemas, the film has captured just $36.6 million in global ticket sales. Its production budget was around $100 million, not including marketing costs.

The problem with both Andrews and Audrey Hepburn is that by 1964, both were far too old to be playing Eliza Doolittle. The character was supposed to be around 18 or 19. Hepburn, at 35, stretched the limits of credulity. Despite her lack of singing talent, she still brought a charm, sweetness and timeless beauty to the role that overcame any negatives. Plus, had Andrews filmed it, it’s likely she’d have been deprived of doing “Mary Poppins” (which may arguably be her best role).
The original movie is 100% cornball, except for the musical numbers, which are great. My favorites are the rooftop “America” and when Anita sings to Maria about sticking with her own kind.

How were non-Spanish speaking audience members to understand those parts? Isn’t this the film that wouldn’t include subtitles?

Interracial dating in Romeo and Juliet? You must be smoking some powerful stuff. You must have Othello in mind, and it was not about interracial dating at all.
There wasn’t that much of it and what’s there isn’t needed to understand anything. It’s just added flavor in the background. There was un-subtitled German in Schindler’s List and nobody complained. This story is a big NothingBurger.
It’s another film of a famous play. It’s no different from another film of The Three Musketeers or Jane Eyre.
Spider-man has made just over $1 billion worldwide in a few weeks.
