Despite rave reviews, Steven Spielberg's "West Side Story" has failed to gain traction with audiences at the box office...In its first three weeks in cinemas, the film has captured just $36.6 million in global ticket sales. Its production budget was around $100 million, not including marketing costs.

There has been a very strong leftist effort to ‘de- Anglo’ the UnitedStates since at least 1985, reaching especially frenzied screeching levels since B Hussein Osama.
Seems to me Leftists probably have more to be upset about with WSS, than Conservatives do.
There was a string of articles from race hustlers about the “ethics” of white men reviving something as “problematic” as WSS.
Especially a “Jooooooo” like Spielberg.
What line was that? “Everything free in America?”
Now that I think about it, there was a scene where two women were helping Maria get ready for a date.
Those two women sang a dialog that was poking gentle humor at the American lifestyle they had been told to expect.
Maybe that part was where the jokes became a little too
barbed.
** My other 3 favorite songs from that movie I haven’t seen in 30 years but never forgot:
A. I Just Met A Girl Named Maria.
B. Somewhere.
C. Something Good Is Coming
This line...
Puerto Rico, You ugly island,
Island of tropic diseases.
Always the hurricanes blowing,
Always the population growing.
It’s a shame because that line paired with...
Puerto Rico, You lovely island,
Island of tropical breezes.
Always the pineapples growing,
Always the coffee blossom blowing.
Is a great example of the ambivalence that immigrants feel about the place they left.
Ok.
Sure, she was more more “legit” for a more legit time.
But I don’t see how the miss on Andrews should affect her voice in WSS.
Ha Ha! I recall that song. That was their truth!
The first two lines in the song were sung in a slow, sweet and lilting way. The second half of the verse was in stabbing staccato style, so sharp remained their frustrations.
Trump should have made AOC czarina of Puerto Rico...maybe in 2025.
But can she sing and dance???
Repeat again
Older audiences may have been turned off by the indecent feralsin the theaters. Who wants to put up with obnoxious people when they can enjoy a movie on a wide screen at home?
COVID may be the death stroke for the theater industry.
OTOH, the new Spiderman flick is actually quite good, and is making good money. No transgender Spiderpronouns, and that definitely helps.
Well I hope you’re wrong because I love the romance of the
sold out movie theater.
Maybe a MAGA-guy dating a liberal gal. Meets the gal’s friends, realizes she must be a loser too so he dumps her and marries a gal from a ranch in Texas....
All set to music, of course.
A ranch for us,
Someday there’ll be
No masks or thugs
or damn vaccines!
We’ll BOTH have guns
And Bibles too
And lots of kids
Who’ll eat beef and stew!
I met Mr. Wise. Obviously, it was meant for Jerome Robbins to direct, but at the pace he was going, the film would’ve been obscenely overbudget and taken a year or longer to finish. That Wise was able to take over completely despite the troubles and get an Oscar for his efforts is certainly testament to his talents and expertise.
As a side note, he actually tried to do a WSS remake of sorts almost 30 years later with “Rooftops.” I actually have not seen it, and it was considered a disappointment.
I saw it and liked it.
Hmm, that seems a tough call to make. There were many excellent musical adaptations. Sadly, I think the genre died by 1970 (even with “Fiddler”). The culture and its tastes had changed. Sadly, not for the better.
Not so much anymore. Very few movies you can enjoy as a family. Hollywood used to be smart enough to know that. It’s a shame because it’s a great industry. Too bad the “stars” are such air heads. The old studio heads used to understand that and kept a tight rein on the “talent”. Now the inmates are running the asylum and it’s a race to see who can get naked first and how explicit sex scenes can be.
Creativity, imagination, God all left behind. That’s why all the sequels and remakes.
