Amazon Alexa slammed for giving lethal challenge to 10-year-old girl

An Amazon Echo owner was left shocked after Alexa proposed a dangerous challenge to her ten-year-old daughter.

AI-powered virtual assistants like Alexa that power smart devices and speakers such as Echo, Echo Dot, and Amazon Tap, come with a plethora of capabilities. These include enabling the users to play simple verbal games or request "challenges" on demand.

A 'shocking' challenge

When sitting idle, such as during the holidays, it wouldn't be unusual for an Amazon Echo owner to ask Alexa, "tell me a challenge to do."

Typically such an auditory request has the AI prompting the user with a quiz question or a similar brainstorming activity.

"The challenge is simple," said Alexa. "Plug in a phone charger about halfway into a wall outlet, then touch a penny to the exposed prongs."

"I was right there and yelled, 'No, Alexa, no!' like it was a dog," said Livdahl, a writer and a worried mother.

"My daughter says she is too smart to do something like that anyway."

I started covering the camera on my laptop probably 15 years ago with a Band-Aid. My spouse thought I was nuts… Not today

That sounds like what I’d expect from 007’s secretary.
Miss Moneypenny was her working title, I believe.
Everything above board and strictly business!

You do know it has to be listening all of the time in order to hear “Hey, Siri”, don’t you?

I was living in Detroit back then and I believe Soupy lost his job over that little stunt. All the kids were confused and upset about it. We had to settle for another episode of
the Clutch Cargo cartoon instead.

You still have to say “hey Siri” for it to speak to you.

You do know that it has to be listening all of the time to hear and recognize "Hey Siri", don't you?

The idea is it only responds when you call it’s name.

It has to be listening and performing speech translations all of the time in order to recognize "Hey Siri", or "Hey Alexa".

I started covering mine a week after I got my first laptop, when I realized I was suddenly getting clothing advertisements that seem especially tailored to what I look like, and I had never ordered clothing online (and still haven’t). I think it was Robert Mueller (back during the Obama administration) who was photographed with his laptop camera covered, as well as the microphone jack.

I was watching when Soupy did that stunt. I knew perfectly well that it was a joke and never for a moment thought that it would be a good idea to raid my dad’s wallet.

It can do that without voice recognition. You’d have to use your fingers.

Damn, I didn’t know Skynet went operational.

I’ll need a 30 watt plasm rifle with extra batteries.

LOL! I tried this:

ME: Hey Siri.

SIRI: Mmmmmm?

ME: Talk dirty to me.

SIRI: I'm not that kind of personal assistant.

I asked "her" again:

ME: Hey Siri.

SIRI: Mmmmmm?

ME: Talk dirty to me.

SIRI: Dirt. Loam. Clay. Compost. Sand.

How can it listen for the phrase “Alexa” unless it is listening all the time? Deep thinkers are not in abundance in our nation.

“do any of those things some other way.”

No need for phones. You can always visit and talk.

No need for a car, you can walk to visit.

But it is folly to walk five miles to find out they aren’t at home ...

“I use a remote for my TV and music selections”

How do you type in the selections on your remote?

“I write my shopping list down on paper using a pen or pencil and my phone stays home”

How does your wife reach you for that last minute item?

“I look outside for the weather”

That doesn’t give you the forecast.

“My phone always shows up and I have a landlines as well.”

Do you whistle for it to come?

Could be, its not as though there is real intelligence behind those searches. Search for challenges and you might get what you asked for (see #2).
