Amazon Alexa slammed for giving lethal challenge to 10-year-old girl

An Amazon Echo owner was left shocked after Alexa proposed a dangerous challenge to her ten-year-old daughter.

AI-powered virtual assistants like Alexa that power smart devices and speakers such as Echo, Echo Dot, and Amazon Tap, come with a plethora of capabilities. These include enabling the users to play simple verbal games or request "challenges" on demand.

A 'shocking' challenge

When sitting idle, such as during the holidays, it wouldn't be unusual for an Amazon Echo owner to ask Alexa, "tell me a challenge to do."

Typically such an auditory request has the AI prompting the user with a quiz question or a similar brainstorming activity.

"The challenge is simple," said Alexa. "Plug in a phone charger about halfway into a wall outlet, then touch a penny to the exposed prongs."

"I was right there and yelled, 'No, Alexa, no!' like it was a dog," said Livdahl, a writer and a worried mother.

"My daughter says she is too smart to do something like that anyway."

It goes to Apple...that you know of.
In 2021 America, I wouldn’t bet Apple is the only set of ears listening.

“That sounds like what I’d expect from 007’s secretary.
Miss Moneypenny was her working title, I believe.
Everything above board and strictly business!”

She wasn’t 007’s secretary and it wasn’t strictly business where Bond was concerned.

Some professional actors could read any page in any phone book. With their skills of pronunciation, intonation and selective silence, that passage of words could sound like the most titilating, most outrageously incindiary phrase ever uttered in history!

Even in the 1980s 100% of electronic communications went through NSA eavesdropping devices.

“Why anyone continues to have those damn things in their homes is beyond me.”

If I slip and fall and cannot get up I can call for help.

“It has to be listening and performing speech translations all of the time in order to recognize “Hey Siri”, or “Hey Alexa”.

LOL, so what. The same could be said for your phone and in fact it has been said not to mention smart tv’s. It’s almost impossible to go 2 blocks in any direction in any populated area without being on a camera.

Maybe if you wrap yourself in tinfoil.....?

Sure it was, unless you and that bloke living five miles away still have land lines. Your post was a justification of using technology as it develops. ;-D

Of course we go with the available technology; however, I think a great deal of it is merely gadget fad. When out to dinner with my family I see everyone sitting around the other tables using their phones. What is the point of going out to enjoy a meal if just to sit there engaging distant people in conversation? They could just go high tech, order on line, have the food delivered, and then eat in their own rooms where they won't getting interrupted while using their precious life-giving link.

I think tech is overused, destroying the quality of experiencing the here and now.

It might have been better to exclude the and more. Some overactive imaginations might take over. Me, I draw a line between what i can do for myself and what is most likely an open door to your best friend, The government.. *it is*.. here to help.

Maybe I will push back rather than embrace tyranny.

My TV does not have a microphone or a camera. The same goes for my PC. I turn my cell phone off much of the time.

Every time you come here you are opening the door to the owner of the site and the government.

Kim Kardashian’s child daughter has a social media account and comments like that are rampant. “Do you see mommy’s cash app?” “Look for Venmo on mommy’s phone” etc!

Last week I took a small pack of Oreo cookies to my office out of mix of different types of snacks.

I never uttered one word and my iPhone was in my pocket until later in the morning so it couldn’t have seen it.

There was some app I had open and ads for Oreos showed up.
