COVID-19 patients have severely increased levels of oxidative stress and oxidant damage, and glutathione deficiency (Glycine with NAC may help)
Medical Xpress / Baylor College of Medicine / Antioxidants ^ | Dec. 27, 2021 | Homa Shalchi / Dr. Rajagopal Sekhar et al

Posted on 01/02/2022 10:59:01 AM PST by ConservativeMind

Researchers have investigated the effect of infection with COVID-19 on the levels of oxidative stress, oxidant damage and glutathione, the most abundant physiological antioxidant. Compared to healthy age-matched individuals whose samples were taken before the pandemic started in 2019, patients hospitalized with COVID-19 had significantly increased levels of oxidative stress and oxidant damage, and markedly reduced levels of glutathione.

The results suggest that supplementation with GlyNAC, a combination of glutathione precursors previously shown to reduce oxidative stress and oxidant damage and increase glutathione as well as improve health indicators such as inflammation, might be beneficial to COVID-19 patients. However, GlyNAC supplementation has not as yet been studied in association with COVID-19.

"This is an important new discovery," Sekhar said. "The finding that younger people with COVID-19 also are glutathione deficient and have elevated oxidative stress and oxidant damage is really surprising, because we do not normally see these defects in younger age groups. These defects appear to get progressively worse with increasing age, and the oldest patients with COVID-19 had higher level of defects in these outcomes. We propose that these changes might be involved in the disease."

"Our previous work has shown that increased levels of oxidative stress and reduced glutathione are not only present in older people, but also in people with HIV, a viral infection, and in patients with diabetes. We also found that supplementing GlyNAC, a combination of glutathione precursors, improved these defects in all these populations," Sekhar said.

In addition, Sekhar's work revealed that supplementing GlyNAC to older people and HIV-patients reversed other abnormalities including inflammation, endothelial dysfunction, insulin resistance, and improved muscle strength, exercise capacity, cognitive decline, gene-damage, and body composition. Some of these defects also have been reported in patients with COVID-19.

Glycine is available in many foods, including bone broth, legumes, dairy products, and spinach. NAC (N-acetyl cysteine) is an antioxidant that is available in most health foods stores, but no longer on Amazon, due to a recent government reinterpretation of NAC’s original “approval” decades ago.

It might help a little if some more of us understood these terms....like “glutathione” for instance.

I was using Jarrow brand NAC since last Feb. No longer available on their site. I found another but people must be catching on. I have COPD. The immediate positive effect was noticeable in the beginning. I don’t notice it as much now. My pulmonologist said it was fine if I take it, same with cardio doc. Apparently, the liquifies/vaporized form is standard in breathing treatments. I am taking 1 500mg/day, along with 6k vitamin D and Coq10. I also take a green drink mix 4-5×/week.. Athletic Greens. Excellent quality stuff.

Take antioxidants, especially D and C and zinc if you are sick with Covid.

Eat lots of leafy green vegetables.

You may want to Google for Dr. Joel Brind and the effectiveness of Glycine also known as Sweetamine because of its sweetness. It is very potent in counteracting inflammation and with a sufficient amount in your system can even prevent a sunburn which basically is an inflammation of your skin. He also has a good YouTube movie explaining the action of Glycine one of the simplest amino acids, worth watching. You have to look for it on Google.

From the first sentence:

“…glutathione, the most abundant physiological antioxidant.”

Glutathione is a common antioxidant in your body. When you are older or anyone gets COVID-19, your body's resources of it are exhausted.

This is not a new discovery.

Saw a headline on a Dr. Eric Berg video that said Melatonin was now considered the strongest antioxidant, beating out glutathione.

Glutathione is the master antioxidant produced by cells. It is made by the body and can become depleted in disease states such as Covid, autism, dementia, etc.

N-acetylcysteine is a great precursor for glutathione and raises levels quite well. One other supplement which also works well to boost glutathione is whey protein isolate which you can buy at the Vitaminshoppe or Kroger.

If you want a good layman's explanation of oxidative stress and the nutrients and chemicals that affect it, you can't be the MedCram video series by Dr. Roger Seheult.

FR's Political Junkie Too put together lots of links to Medcram lectures that address the molecular biology of COVID, how it affects cells in our bodies, and the role of nutrients and supplements in fighting it. Dr. Seheult's diagrams and visual aids are excellent to understanding what is going on.

Because of this COVID business, people are researching and learning a lot about supplements. I’ve got a relative who researches it about six plus hrs per day. She calls it biology chemistry - or biochemistry or something like that.
