I don’t even see why it’s complex.

Considering that it seems ruffly half of the population is retarded now, it doesn’t surprise me that many might struggle with this simple problem.
To: SouthernClaire
I am 71, and I checked the link to make sure, but I got the correct answer instinctively and practically instantly. I fail to see what makes this complicated.

The total number lost is two passengers. Add that number to those currently on the train to get original number of passengers.

How many people were on the train to begin with?I suggest the correct answer is 0, unless some people live on the train.

Either the correct answer is 65, or there’s some clever subtlety in the way the question is worded to throw the testee off, i.e. it’s a trick question/clickbait.

All one needs to concern oneself with is the net gain or loss of passengers during the trip.
That makes the word problem simple.
19 passengers get off while 17 passengers get on to replace them… simple subtraction gives us the answer to either add or subtract passengers to the final tally of passengers. Voilá! Answer.
