A small group of Alaskan middle-schoolers get a hands-on lesson in hunting and processing food from the land.

NIKISKI, Alaska — Before the sun rose on Nov. 11, 10 students from Nikiski Middle & High School had gathered with their teacher, Jesse Bjorkman, at a gas-station parking lot here in this small community on the Kenai Peninsula — to gear up for a moose hunt.

Dispersed among five vehicles, the group drove about 10 miles to the Nikiski Escape Route, a gravel road connecting Nikiski to the city of Kenai. Inching slowly down the snowy road, the students peered out each side of the cars, scanning the edge of the spruce forests in search of moose.

Within five minutes, they had spotted one, but moved on after seeing a calf nearby. Ten minutes later, the students sighted another moose, but left after realizing it was on tribal land. Mr. Bjorkman reminded the group that “even in a hunt, if we don’t get an animal, it’s still a success.” But within 45 minutes, around 8:50 a.m., the group found a third moose, lounging in a snow heap under a spruce tree.

When his middle school students gave him the OK, Mr. Bjorkman set up his rifle and fired one shot. It was a lethal blow to the roughly 950-pound cow moose. The students gasped at the sound of the gunshot, then giggled with excitement. The moose jumped and sprinted a few hundred feet deeper into the woods before falling down in a clearing.

It was the first time moose hunting for Rex Wittmer, 12. He said finding the animal, shooting it and tracking the kill made his heart race.

Heads exploding in liberal readers all across bicoastal America. The rest of us are saying, “Yeah, moose - yum!” I have a moose who occasionally reposes in my front yard - watched him grow up from an adorable little moosling. Certain friends ask me, “Why don’t you shoot him?” My reply: “Because then I’d have a dead moose in my front yard.” These kids got 500 lbs of meat out of it. Think about that: 500 pounds. Of meat. My freezer holds a couple boxes of fish sticks and TV dinners. Not happening.

Will also make one hell of a disection project for biology class. No searching for a tiny frog heart when you have a 15lb hunk of heart muscle laying among a mound of other assorted offal.

Alaskan Girl Scouts participate in trapping, skinning beavers

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS – November 12, 2003

"ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- In a practice that has angered animal rights activists, Girl Scout Troop 34 in Alaska is learning to trap and skin beavers.

The girls are killing the beavers as part of a state flood- management program.

"We think it sends a very, very bad message that when animals cause a problem you kill them," said Stephanie Boyles of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. She said the Girl Scouts should want girls to become "stewards of wildlife, not abusers."

Last spring, about 10 members of the Fairbanks troop and their families helped catch two beavers using a snare and lethal traps. The girls were taught how to find the animals' dens and how to lay the traps. Working under close supervision, the girls used knives to skin the beavers.

The troop had the pelts tanned and plans to make hats and mittens once a dozen hides are collected. The girls also want to cook the meat.

They plan to begin setting traps out again this month ..."
