Prepper Ping - Regional shortages due to Supply Chain breakdown
Your observed regional shortages/information is requested as a precursor towards other shortages.
Your participation is requested.

(From the OP):" These notes above are all precursors that show significant stress in the supply chain.
Once these issues are consistently visible, we are continue toward food instability very quickly, sector by sector, category by category.

"The reason I list the shortage of potatoes as the #1 precursor is because every food outlet sells a potato in some form.
Every supermarket and every single restaurant (fancy, sit down or fast food) sells some form of potato.
Potatoes are demanded by every single food outlet"

The chicken breasts around my area are gigantic, bone in skin on.

Chicken, even at The Big Box store has been kind of iffy for a solid decade. I think it all started with an avian flu a while ago.

And a variety and the selection of cuts has also been off for years now. Go into a store and get you a pack of chicken backs nowadays... those are almost non-existent. Whole roasters are usually stocked. And for a while only boneless/skinless breasts, no legs, thighs, some wings.

Horrible situation. We’ve been lucky so far. No problems. I have 3 cats...2 of which are 15-18# so food and litter are needed frequently. Hope your situation improves.

Yeah, rice has been low where I live but I can eventually get some. The candy isle is empty. Crackers isle empty short time but now is filling up again. Paper plates running out but t.p. ok. Plenty of milk, eggs, yogart, cottage cheese and off brand cream cheese. Pkg deli meats ok.

No staff shortage at WM that I can see. Plenty of consumers at all hours and are friendly. I noticed car plates from AZ and Michigan, FL and SC ... and plenty from my own state of NC

PetCo in Mountain View, CA has plenty. Fully stocked. Just bought 40 pounds of cat litter.

Two more words: government jobs

Every one of those majors is vastly over represented in government jobs these same people also get full government pensions after 20 years of service. Like it or not every government HR department is full of sociology majors. Political science is the gateway degree to a job inside the belt way as is a law degree for the upper class of the beltway.

Aren't the Seattle shortages because the trucks can't get over the Cascade Mountain passes?

(that's a joke -- that was what we heard over in Spokane and CdA)

Wet cat food is nonexistent in Walmart right now. A few varieties of single cans but no cases of cans.

Hi.

I noticed two other threads about shortages, and the posters were in different parts of the country.

So, not directly related to this thread, I thought I’d mention it. Cat food.

Wet and dry cat food. Isnt that odd? Bear shelves.

Not only in the NE or Washington state, but right here in Pinellas county Florida.

Never had that issue before.

Our local WM had plenty of canning supplies, including lids.

This is a good time to stock up when most people are not thinking about canning.

This is true. We went to the store to get frozen french fries for the air fryer. (1/8 shoestring no coating. Use popcorn salt it sticks better.) Sure enough the freezer was kind of empty of frozen potato products. We still got what we went for only we had to get kroger brand. Milk is weirdly inconsistent but I get organic whole milk and she likes lactose free so we can usually find those. Cream cheese and Swiss cheese were scarce. I am lucky to live in Northern California. We are in the middle of the most agriculturally productive area in the entire world.

In Ohio here. I don’t buy a lot of the items you specified, but I noticed Claussen pickles were in short supply for months during 2021. Those items have been replenished during the last month. The shelves appear to be generally well supplied here at both Krogers and our local supermarket.

I read that the shortage of wet cat food was due to a shortage of aluminum for cans. I don’t know why cat food would be impacted more than all the other products packaged in aluminum cans.

The fact they formed some "task force" shows they're more focused on theatrics than results. "Look! We're doing stuff!" There are a number of options available to make things jump but they're not touching any of that. They prefer to manage a decline rather than fix one.

Not true, all of the food destined for institutional use (cafeterias, restaurants, etc.) is processed in different facilities using different packaging and cannot be repurposed into the consumer supply chain (at least not efficiently and effectively enough), so it went to waste. then lack of containers for both supply chains hit along with lack of stored food product due to lack of use and ability to store harvests; drained what was in storage and now we have shortages in both areas because we have not replenished storage stock because farmers were told to till their crops under as there was nowhere to send them for processing.

This is a complex issue involving a multitude of supply chains, not just from the farm to the grocer or the table or the restaurant.

Ours was really sold down during the holidays but I managed a large dozen pack of pint sized mason for $9 and each one easily holds an ounce of my favorite strain ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป
