Prepare for war: That is the message Joe Biden is thought to have delivered to Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky when the two spoke this week, after the US rejected Russia's security demands in eastern Europe.
US intelligence believes the invasion will likely come in February, when colder temperature will have frozen the ground solid - allowing Putin's tanks and artillery to roll in without getting bogged down in mud.
If they're right, that gives Zelensky and his generals just a few weeks to prepare their defences. No doubt the question being asked in Kiev right now is: Where will Putin attack, and what are his aims?

For Putin to achieve the Russian objectives in the Ukraine, it does not require a full scale, very bloody, blitzkrieg type invasion. The Russian objective is to reincorporate Russified/Orthodox areas of the eastern Ukraine. Putin does not wish to incur or induce many casualties or cause significant property damage. He would like to take those areas the way he took Crimea. Only a fool would rush in tanks over frozen ground into the teeth of a defense manned by committed soldiers armed with modern anti tank missiles and drones. More likely he will create civil disturbances, attack with well trained special forces behind the lines, establish air superiority, use air cavalry type units to open safe corridors and then send in the armor. Suspect it will be over very quickly. There won’t even be a pause in the gas deliveries to Germany.
Likely has troops in plain cloths already in the Donbass controlled by Russian sympathizers, just as they did successfully before.

Nope. Russia’s objective is to keep Ukraine in economic turmoil and tied up in a disputed situation in Donbas. Russia could have annexed Donbas years ago if they wanted to. They have not because they don’t want it.

Funny how the smartest people in the room are constantly out-thought and out-maneuvered by men like Putin.
Europe -- that is, the European Union -- is a population of over 450 million and with a GDP something larger than the US. The Ukraine is not as yet a full NATO member, and has a population of about 44 million.
Close to 500 million Europeans "seem" to stand against Russia, a nation with about 165 million and a far smaller GDP that the EU.
What in the world is the Biden administration doing making so much war chatter about the Ukraine and Russia? Before any open hostilities. Whatever one's opinion is as to the motivation of the Biden regime, it is not "peace making." It is panic-making of some sort.
My wager is that it is for local consumption, in the "look over there" mode of sleight of hand. Too many other messes which need "look, a squirrel!" as their ploy.

They’ll gush over how “tough” Biden saved us all from WWIII, of course.
Nope. The Minsk agreements are about ending the war by reintegrating Donbas back into Ukraine with the amnesty of insurgents and restoring their voting rights.
Putin doesn’t want to hear about Ukraine as long as it is out of NATO.
Biden wants to keep it on fire for wag the dog purposes. Ukrainian government is barely a factor. They are doing what Biden says them.

I learned several decades ago, that when a leader is referred to as a “strongman”, you’re not supposed to like him. It was my first inkling that news reports were not necessarily objective.
The Russians need to make the Ukraines come to them.
They need to make the Ukraines be on the offensive.
Russia has 6 Divisions on the border.
Divide them up into 3 Corps, enter Ukraine and without fighting, just hold the troops at various ridiculous locations but well inside of Ukraine.
Then wait.
Don’t try to take Kiev. Don’t move into small cities and villages that are fortified.
Wait until the Ukrainians are pissed off enough and they’ll give up their positions to attack the Russians in meaningless locations in the countryside.
Then, the Russians have moved the Ukrainians out of their dug in positions.
Now, take whatever Corps the Ukrainians are not attacking as they can’t attack all three, and take Kiev.
That’s my plan.
For weeks the tension, for weeks the fear, for weeks Joe will poop himself as Russia just parks themselves inside and wait.
It’s the ultimate irony when the thugs of the left throw out that “strongman” charge.
A savvy prez would use those 3 weeks to provide laser guided and smart weapons and intel to the Ukrainians. They could take out Russian positions during that entire time, since they’d be stationary.
In Gulf War 1, General Schwartzkopf said “if you move we will kill you; if you stay still we will find you.”
But of course, we don’t have a savvy prez.
Ukraine needs to “prepare for impact”.
Daily Mail seems to be hoping for the worst.
