Yup, Dwight Yoakum and others were the dying remnants of pure country in the 90's. Now it's country-pop or just pop.

Anyone got other real country artists from the 90's?

Not from the 90s but guy I like and halfway follow countrywise is a Canadian singer, Corb Lund. Try: Good Copenhagen, Tool for the Job, Keep an Edge on Your Knife, and Roughest Neck Around-—a song about oilfield workers, dedicated to his brother

I really like Junior Brown. I’m not steeped in country music but a brother of mine is and he likes to listen to him, too. Unless I’m being humored.
