A movie that I have seen about 5 times.....It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World. A huge cast of well known actors and the story line is great.

Watch “A Patch of Blue” for Elizabeth Hartman’s haunting Oscar nominated performance. A wonderful actress who unfortunately took her own life.

That is a truly great movie. Two hours and 54 minutes. So you need to dedicate more than just a little bit of time to enjoy it.

Funniest movie ever! Funnier when you see all the extra comics that had walk on parts in it.

I saw some so-called comedies in the 1980s and 1990s. My thoughts were ...”These are comedies?” They were just people acting silly.

Never a Richard Burton fan and totally never a Burton + Liz Taylor fan - hated every movie they did together and thought they were always overrated.

The movie that included Taylor that I liked best was Giant.

I liked Jack Lemmon in comedies or at least comedic roles, but didn’t like him as a drama character.

I did not think A Patch of Blue was Poitier’s best.

Liked the Hustler - thought Gleason and Newman were perfectly cast.

I spent about 40 minutes trying to find “The Defiant Ones” (Netflix, Amazon Prime, a library, Hulu, etc.). I was all set to buy the DVD on eBay when I tried my last source — another public library we belong to. The DVD was there but has several holds on it. Then I noticed a small reference on the library page to a streaming service called “Kanopy”.

I created a new Kanopy account, logged in, and searched for the movie. Bingo! Success!

I started watching on my laptop, but then thought “I’ll bet they have a Roku app.” Sure enough, a few more minutes and I had the Kanopy on my Roku, launched the new app, used the “Link” feature to connect the Kanopy and Roku accounts, and up popped the movie on my big-screen TV! It allowed me to resume the movie on the TV where I left off on my laptop, too.

When tech works, it is really amazing.

Thanks for the recommendation for the movie. I’m about ten minutes into it and it looks good.

PS. We don’t have cable TV, so I cannot watch TCM. TCM drives me nuts, anyway, because it is not an on-demand service.

"TCM drives me nuts,...it is not an on-demand service."

It's part of my (very) basic cable package - I view the following week's movies and have it record the ones I want to see - they save for 3 months, so I always have a stash of "classic" movies to watch!

Now show WATERLOO, with Rod Steiger as Napoleon and Christopher Plumber as Wellington! Filmed by the same Russian Director!

With the Red Army cast as both sides of the battle. No CGI here, folks!

Hustler is best; Mockingbird is important and well done.

The others are touchy-feelie, where the psychologist knows all and the people are hopelessly weird, clueless and not in control of their lives at all.

‘I did like Sidney Poitier in “The Bedford Incident” ...’

read the book (by Mark Rascovich), which will highlight the low quality of the movie itself...a highly significant plot point in the book was torched in favor of a more conventional and listless climax that any schoolboy could dream up...

as for the actors, not once when I read the book did I picture Munceford as a black, and while Widmark did make a decent Captain Finlander, a core character trait of his that triggered the ‘incident’ itself was watered down by the lousy script rework...

Jack Klugman was basically the unsung hero, in terms of acting performances, in The Days of Wine and Roses.

Jack Klugman was a great natural actor. His Twilight Zone episode was well done (he's a pool shark). And of course, he improved on Walter Matthau's version of Oscar Madison (who was mainly grumpy) in the Sit-Com version of "The Odd Couple".

Some think the ever lovely Ava Gardner, is at her most accomplished and talented in this one.

I’m a bit more taken with her in On The Beach, a few years before.

Could have spent his Final Days on earth with a Goddess, but Peck left.

what a Maroon!

probably; I thought he hammed it up a little, but a TV series requires a little more effort, so that’s to be expected...but the series really missed the mark with Tony Randall as Jack Lemmon’s character...

Lemmon was, in my humble opinion, one of the finest actors of recent times; as witness ‘Days of Wine and Roses...’

But The Blues Brothers ... Hands down, the winner.

...after the original Gone in 60 Seconds (1974).

The Hustler was the first movie that I realized what acting was. Before it was monster movies and Three Stooges. I never gave up my love of the Stooges.

Tony Randall might have moved the character away from Neil Simon's version, which empahasized the OCD/nrurotic side, and not quite so much the neatnik side. The opera buff business was Randall's invention. However, I think Klugman and Randall had great chemistry, clearly irritating each other but caring deeply for each other anyway.

‘Tony Randall might have moved the character away from Neil Simon’s version, which empahasized the OCD/nrurotic side...’

indeed; you’ve hit the mark precisely...one of the signature moments in the movie was when they had the two girls in apartment, and Oscar goes to fix drinks, expecting a fine evening to ensue (’is everybody happy?’) and upon his return, finds not only Felix but the two previously ebullient girls weeping copiously after Felix tells his tale...I can’t picture the prissy and aloof Randall effectively pulling that off, being incapable of generating the requisite empathy...

but then, I detest television programming in its entirety, so I may be unduly biased...
