DENVER (KDVR) — A couple in the Baker neighborhood of Denver woke up last Sunday morning to find five of the seven bikes in their garage missing, along with lots of camping gear.

Vanden Dries said one of the other stolen bikes belonged to her boyfriend, and the fifth belonged to a friend.

“If it’s money you’re after, I will buy them back,” Vanden Dries said.

Okay.

Anyway, video at source.

My bikes are probably worth a little under $5000, and I keep them here in my place.

People see me carrying a bike up the stairs and they say, 'There's a bike rack outside.'

I just look at them and shake my head.

Wish I was less naive ~12 years ago! My husband at the time had $10k of bikes stolen from a locked bike room, inside of a locked garage. California cops said “oh that sucks..” Thankfully he kept his receipts and insurance covered them though. These days I would 100% carry them upstairs.

For some reason I laughed and even snickered a bit reading this.

Cool thing about my bike shop is every bike they sell is automatically registered with the local police, so the serial number is on record.

Always keep your serial numbers.
I can’t speak for the US, but in my city, pawnshops can’t sell bikes unless those bikes have been vetted by the cops. The cops check for serial numbers on a monthly basis.

For the sake of a few pounds, I just get a light-weight stock bike and replace the parts with good quality parts as they need replacement. I don’t see the point of paying for a bike that you have to keep with you at all times. It becomes a weight in itself.

$8,000 in bikes stolen...

“I gave my number to probably 30 different people asking if they saw anything, to let me know,” Vanden Dries said.

This is a job for Madame Ruby:

For $20 I can tell you a lot of things.
For 30 I can tell you more.
And for 50 I can tell you everything.

A long standing truism here in Colorado the bike perched on a bike rack on the top of a transporting vehicle is worth more than the vehicle.

I would say that’s a good guess.

Probably plastic bikes with more gears than sense.

All my bikes are made of metal and say things like columbus, or 531, and the other random stuff says campagnolo, dura ace or brooks (except for the french one)

For me, the main concern is lightness. If they are light enough, that’s all I care about. I can replace stock parts with good parts on an as needed basis.

The bikes owner/owners have some very devious friend and/or relative. Inside job.

I've been reading about some bike makers who are making steel frames that are lighter than aluminum.

And then there's Alchemy, who makes frames out of titanium.

And carbon fibre as well. That’s a favoured material, because you can get the frame down as little as 2.5 pounds and 15lb bike overall.

That’s what I figured algore meant by ‘plastic’, which is why I didn’t mention it. 8~)
