The “German Shepherd mix” in the story appears to be GSD/Belgian Mallinois mix. Very capable working dogs, with a lot of energy. I’ll bet it got no exercise.

Mallinois

Like pits, the breed has become a victim if it’s own popularity. I tend to look on herding dogs in the hands of “families” the way that many people look upon pits. I don’t really trust them, or rather, trust them to revert to form when stressed.

Belgian Malinois are serious working dogs with really high prey drive. People get these dogs not knowing what they are. A woman who lived near my father was walking down the street with a 1 year old Neapolitan mastiff pulling her down the road. It saw another dog and she couldn't hold on to it anymore. I helped her get the dog back. She bought it at the local mall and had no idea how big it would get. Luckily the dog wasn't aggressive.
