It's wouldn't be about convicting, it would be about putting an asterix next to his opinion. It's the same thing as when they went after Kavanaugh, there was never a chance of him not being confirmed, they simply wanted to tarnish his future opinions.
Every future article written by a leftist journalist about the case (and there would be MANY) would include a section about how the decision is flawed because Thomas should have been impeached except for partisan Republicans.
