Biden says 'a woman's right to choose is fundamental' and it's up to states and voters to protect it after Roe v. Wade leak: Schumer and Pelosi accuse conservative justices of 'ripping up the Constitution', lying to the Senate and blame Trump

President Joe Biden said women have a 'fundamental' right to an abortion and called on American voters to 'elect pro-choice officials this November' in Tuesday morning statement, hours after an explosive report that suggests the Supreme Court is poised to overturn Roe v. Wade.

He also pledged the White House would be 'ready when any ruling is issued.'

Less than 12 hours earlier, the Democratic leaders of Congress released a joint statement blasting the leaked opinion as an 'abomination' and accusing the high court's conservatives of 'ripping up the Constitution.'

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer then took to the Senate floor and delivered a searing rebuke echoing his Monday night statement with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and announcing the Senate will hold a vote on federal abortion legislation -- after a similar effort tanked earlier this year.

The president's statement began, 'We do not know whether this draft is genuine, or whether it reflects the final decision of the Court. With that critical caveat, I want to be clear on three points about the cases before the Supreme Court.'

'First, my administration argued strongly before the Court in defense of Roe v. Wade. We said that Roe is based on “a long line of precedent recognizing ‘the Fourteenth Amendment’s concept of personal liberty’… against government interference with intensely personal decisions.” I believe that a woman’s right to choose is fundamental, Roe has been the law of the land for almost fifty years, and basic fairness and the stability of our law demand that it not be overturned.'

‘ripping up the Constitution.’

The 0th Amendment (on the back in invisible ink with a treasure map)

“Thy may kill all babies in thine womb. No pronouns have been established yet, so it is not a valid life...”

It's not a fraud, it was expected. The leak was planned to gin up the activists who will gin up the media who will gin up Democrats and women to get out and vote. It's that simple, not to mention a made to order fundraising issue for Dems.

Hey Chuck - Slavery was legal for a long, long time as well. I guess that’s why all the Klan were Democrats and wanted slavery still, because of legal precedent?

Schumer and Pelosi accuse conservative justices of 'ripping up the Constitution'

Tremendous irony in Pelosi getting upset because someone "ripped up" a document.

Also: no one "ripped up" the Constitution. They just decided that there is no "penumbra".

The right to kill a baby is not fundamental.

Women do have a right to choose what to do with their bodies—right up until the time they create a new one.

I don’t think there’s anything Biden CAN do about this. Congress certainly isn’t going to be able to pass a blanket legalization of abortion. They wouldn’t even have 50 votes for it.

My opinion is that the first order of business is every state’s legislature now passes their version of what can and cannot happen in their jurisdiction under their new authority to legislate this. In deep blue states there will be relatively fewer restrictions, and in deep red states there will be relatively more, and in the purple it will be somewhere in between.

Frankly this probably is what should have happened in the first place, had Roe not circumvented the legislatures’ prerogative.

The leaker and SCOTUS have just altered to outlook for the midterms. The Left which cannot defend Biden or anything his admin is responsible for now has the issue to rally all shades of the Left to vote this November. This could be a second Dred Scott in its effect on the country, though not on its merits.

I said elsewhere that I think the odds are at least 50% that this is a fraud, implementing the same strategy as the “leak” about Trump’s phone call with Zelensky that led to the first bogus impeachment; the presumption being (more likely to be true in this case), that the alleged source of the content won’t release any documentation debunking the reported content. All this, I think, is about ratcheting up outrage among pro-abortion moderates who otherwise would be likely to vote against the Dems in the mid-terms, thereby reducing the party’s dependence on increasingly scrutinized vote fraud practices.

Well, you know, Chuck and Nancy; I’ve read the Constitution; I’ve studied it. And after all that I just can’t seem to place my finger on that part of the Constitution that says abortion is a right protected by the Constitution. Hell, nowhere in the Constitution is the word “abortion” even mentioned, in ANY context.
