‘Top Gun: Maverick’ – No Woke, Just Thrills and Nostalgia on Steroids
Hollywood in Toto ^ | 12 May 2022 | Christian Toto

Satisfying sequel hits nearly all the marks while outdoing the original

The 1986 smash “Top Gun” was both a movie and a pop cultural moment.

The latter mattered more, given the tenor of the times. President Ronald Reagan lived at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. NW D.C., and his confidence buoyed the nation. Pop hits like “Danger Zone” and “Take My Breath Away” crushed the Billboard charts, and rightly so.

The film’s star, Tom Cruise, couldn’t be more movie-star handsome or powerful within the industry — even if 1985’s “Legend” showed his commercial vulnerability.

“Top Gun” was the right movie at the right time, even if the film itself was far from great.

So where does that leave “Top Gun: Maverick?”

The oft-delayed sequel can’t replicate that Reagan-era optimism or the original’s rah-rah patriotism. This is 2022, and cheering on a straight white male military hero is problematic to the small but vocal minority that runs the culture.

Don’t tell that to Cruise.

The ageless star is in full control of his film destiny, and he clearly helped “Maverick” avoid most, if not all, of the culture war booby traps.

Here’s a fictional 1975 made for TV movie about it;

Ready for this. I saw “Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness” today (review on my @WallsOther Twitter account). Average, but I’m guessing like some of the other “interim” Marvel movies, it is a stair-step for a big “Avengers” type sequence later.

When you compare shots of Cruise today to her, it’s shocking.

He could pass for 40. In remarkable shape, does most of his own stunts. Hat’s off to him for conditioning.

After you see “Top Gun” be sure to watch the parody called “Hot Shots.”

Some great gags in Hot Shots....

Yeah, but man, Cruise looks fantastic for his age.

I read somewhere else that he provided a slot for Val Kilmer in this sequel. Anyone got the specifics?

I hate him (Scientology show pony douche for an evil money cult) who can’t play anything but the best at (whatever the movie is about) and these films because they are the fast and furious drivel of aviation. In the eighties I thought it crap and still do. As a kid I grew up around iMiramar and my father got us in the base. loved Tomcats and aviation before this crap. I did the private pilot thing too. Dunkirk had what I like. How anyone can watch that evil psycho endless frat boy dope for two seconds and enjoy it utterly escapes me.

Yes, there is mention of this in a “reunion shot” where the critic says it will give you a lump in your throat.

The “80s” lasted from January 1981 to November 1992. Music started to suck around 1989/1990 though.

I think one of the greatest injustices in the film world in the last 30 years was he did not even get nominated as Best Supporting for his Doc Holiday role. I think that was one of the best film portrayals of the modern era.

Say what you want, but Cruise puts everything into a movie, does his own stunts and does whatever it takes to try and make the best films he can. Name me another star who does that.

I haven’t been to a theater in about 4 years I think but I may go to see this film as I want some great escapism. We all need that.

**He could pass for 40. In remarkable shape, does most of his own stunts. Hat’s off to him for conditioning.**

He’s got motivation$$$ to stay in shape. So do I. I want to play football and basketball with my grandkids as long as possible. Haven’t tried for several years, but after a warmup could maybe still touch the rim. At 6’2” I probably can stuff 5’8” TC repeatedly. I’ll be 68 in July, shortly after TC turns 60.

I never have bothered to dye my hair, or wear makeup. No botox, roids, or facelifts.

Stunts? Loved charging around the pasture on a dirt bike. I rode a rodeo bull once. That was enough (it was a very short ride). Decided Dad was right. It’s got nothing to do with working cattle, ranching, or horsemanship; bull riding is just gladiator stuff.
