Remember the feel-good PBS period drama, “Downton Abbey?” The structure used for the exterior shots of the home of the Earl of Grantham (Hugh Bonneville) was Highclere Castle in Hampshire, England. Highclere was the real-life home of George Herbert, Lord Carnarvon, who bankrolled Howard Carter’s excavation of the tomb of King Tut.

They also did some scenes in the interior. That show enabled the owner to preserve the mansion.
