Ah, a less exotic potential explanation. Massive numbers of just gay guys in close proximity. Could spread within that group without requiring std mechanisms and produced the observed outbreak. Doubtless with THAT crowd STDs also went around but they’d not be necessary to spread this. Just need one or two attendees to have had it—an easy flight from endemic Africa, and that party would have spread it.
