Two frat boys from the University of Missouri have been charged in connection with a 19-year-old at the school who was left blind and unable to walk or talk after being forced to down a family-sized bottle of Tito's vodka.
Ryan Delanty and Thomas Shultz were indicted Friday in Missouri's Boone County in connection with the treatment of Daniel Santulli, a teenager whose family say was forced to drink until his heart stopped last October during pledge month at Phi Gamma Delta. Shultz is facing an additional felony charge of tampering with physical evidence.
He has been left permanently and severely disabled as a result, in what his family's lawyer says is the worst-known incident of hazing abuse in US history.
Santulli's family has previously filed civil suits against 23 members of Phi Delta Gamma but this is the first time anyone has been criminally charged.
It's unclear if Delanty and Shultz have been named as defendants in that civil suit.
The two young men are charged with felony hazing and misdemeanors of supplying liquor to a minor or intoxicated person.
Santulli was force-fed beer through a tube and told to down an entire bottle of vodka by his 'fraternity fathers,' including Delanty. At the end of the night, Santulli had a shocking .468 blood alcohol level, six times the legal limit in Missouri.

Maybe in Russia.
The two are definitely not “college material” not that that means anything anymore. This crime will be “some people did some things”(ed) and nothinged.
How about a class on not going on the sidewalk.
Where would Americans be without the British press to publicize our pathologies?
Amy Winehouse died with a BA of .42 alcohol poisoning ......
never have understood “pledging” anyhow.... i certainly would NOT do something that would put me in danger, i guess you have to be a people pleaser to get into it.
I wouldn’t call it the worst ever since quite a few have died from hazing events.
Actually, people that large do pledge fraternities all the time, I pledge a fraternity in 1978 we had a couple of football players on the team, they participated in all sorts of hazing rituals, nothing like described in the article, which is a crime, our hazing was stupid silly stuff but was great fun when you are 18-22 years old.
What a tragedy! I can’t imagine the grief the parents are experiencing.
For the overwhelming majority of people, their college years were great times where lifelong friendships develop. It’s only natural that wanting your son or daughter to attend your alma mater is important, same goes for a fraternity, I pledged a fraternity in 1978 and still have great friends from that period of my life, I wouldn’t trade it for anything.
Joining something in college is not only a natural thing to do but something that a large percentage of young people do, some join fraternities/sororities, others join dorm groups, honor societies, political organizations, seeking out like minded people in college has been going on forever and will never stop, it’s basic human nature.
Some 18-year old kid goes off to college, away from home for the first time ever, in my case to a college with over 50,000 students they are going to make friends and develop interests that go beyond attending class.
Hazing used to be innocents embarrassment that everyone suffered equally, to bond with an organization.
Now it’s become sadomasochistic torture by dumbasses. Who would want to join a frat with such morons?
The worst hazing we had in our fraternity was done by guys who came out of the military after Desert Storm.
You have 10s of thousands of young people joining fraternities and sororities around the country every year, you hear about these egregious cases because these organizations are not politically correct anymore, they are considered elite rich white kids practicing to be white supremacists. /sarcasm to make a point.
Rich white people do join these organizations, but my experience was the black fraternities hazed a lot more and were much more severe about it. Omega phi psi was a black fraternity when I was in college, one of their rituals was branding their pledges just like they would cattle, their fraternity symbol was branded on the upper arm of everyone in the fraternity of over 100 people.
I don’t know of a single fraternity that condones sadomasochistic torture of anyone, this argument is similar to what liberals do about guns, one insane person shoots up a school and now everyone who owns one is a killer using a weapon of war, it’s demonizing millions of people based on the actions of an extremely small minority.
Phi Gamma Delta - I think I’ve heard of them. Oh, wait. Fiji. Well known for their parties a half century ago.
That fraternity should be permanently disbanded, and everyon involved should be criminally prosecuted to the maximum extent of the law

Seriously? A little harsh. Young people do stupid things. I place most of the blame on the “victim.” Nobody forced him to do what he did. Everybody is always looking to blame someone else for their poor decisions.
Here is the underlying problem: We have too many kids in college, and we give out too many student loans. These kids go to college, attend classes for 2 hours per day, and then have the rest of the day to do crap like this. The kids who have to work their way through school don’t join frats and graduate on time. A second issue is: You would think that these schools would hammer home the dangers of heavy drinking/alcohol poisoning.
Phi Gamma Delta is a very old fraternity. Periodically local chapters run into trouble because of arrant stupidity on the part of some members. The national appropriately suspends their charter and cancels individual members.
This type of incident gives Greek life a bad name.
I had a similar thing happen to me. I was unable to drink anything other than beer for 10 years. I have never had a “shot” since.
I think fraternities are so ************** stupid and should be permanently banned.
Yep...I was in a frat at WMU (TKE) in the late 70’s. We had hazing but it was reasonably harmless and served a purpose.
Nothing close to this kind of dangerous crazy crap that you hear about now every so often.
And this is the reason why I sent my daughter to the local community college for the first two years and she lived at home. The second two years was at a local for your college and she moved in with another professional female across town. I’ve always said 18 years old is way too young to send anybody halfway across the country to live with a bunch of other 18-year-olds outside a Structured environment. for example, the military.
Unless these two idiots can claim mental diminishment because THEY were drunk, too, charge them with attempted murder.
However, they are frat rats and probably from rich families. Nothing will happen to them.
