When I was in school (1950s-1960s), every pickup in the school parking lot had a gun rack and at least one rifle or shotgun in it. We never had school shootings then either.

that was true in rural New Hampshire in the 70’s. Probably most other rural areas also.

My high school in Washington, DC had a small-bore rifle range and a competitive rifle team. Team members brought their rifles (in cases) to school on buses and streetcars. We also had a cadet corp; officers and first sergeants wore their swords to school when in full dress. Our drill rifles were 1903 Springfields (with firing pins removed) and kept in the school’s armory.
