For the fourth time in 13 months, the 22-year-old McLaughlin set the world record. On Friday, she ran the 400-meter hurdles at world championships in 50.68 seconds. She shattered her old mark by 0.73 seconds, a ridiculous number for a race of this distance and an amount of time that, in the world before McLaughlin, it had taken 33 years to trim.
After McLaughlin received her gold medal and listened to "The Star-Spangled Banner,'' World Athletics president Sebastian Coe handed her a $100,000 check -- the prize for breaking the record at worlds. This marked the fourth straight major race in which she's bettered the mark.
On a clear, perfect, 72-degree night at Hayward Field, McLaughlin left Bol and Muhammad behind by the 150-meter mark. By the time the American reached the final curve, it was clear this would strictly be a race against the clock.
Some answers lie in the mix of improved track surfaces, new technology in the spikes that hurdling great Edwin Moses compared to "having trampolines on your shoes,'' and a new coaching regimen employed by Kersee, who has worked with virtually all of America's greats, in the run-up to last year's Olympics.
But mostly, pure talent.

A real woman breaking records among peers. How much anyone wanna bet there’s a man thinking about transitioning as you read this specifically to try to beat her. Patriarchy indeed.
Probably.

She’s cute too. There’s something attractive about fit-but-feminine real women.
with all the phoney baloney pro sports and their mega million dollar contracts and their arrogant lifestyles and attitudes,Sidney is so refreshing....although I suspect she can garner millions of dollars..
Good God that first run.
I guess Amateur Sports went the way of the Dodo bird.
She’s incredible- and definitely a hotty.
Youth and fame are fleeting.
Enjoy it while it last.
Have a plan for after.
Love our athletes this year. Some outstanding young people.
I picked up on the promo I received in fakebook about a woman actually winning in a woman’s event and beating her own record . . . so I tuned in . . . and shared.
Wow, that was an awesome run.....and she’s hot too.
22 years old.
Her time would have finished 7th place in the flat 400 run earlier in the day. An amazing athlete indeed. And, at 22, she’s not anywhere near finished.
To break her previous world record by 1.4% may not be quite Beamonesque, but it will certainly suffice.
I stood next to Edwin Moses one day at Disneyland about 35 years ago. Longest legs compared to overall height I have ever seen on a human. He was created to hurdle. Just like I've always thought Dennis Rodman was created to be a high jumper.
I don’t know her politics or anything, but the look on her face seems positive — like she’s NOT a jerk as so many athletes are.
What an accomplishment! Truly remarkable athleticism! And thanks, knarf, for posting the video link.
