Basically they’re out of premium. Wholesalers only deliver premium and regular to the stations. There’s a pre-set blend for the pumps to take x% premium and blend with y% regular to make the mid-grade. Generally it’s 60% to 40%, but varies depending on brand.
Those “I did that” stickers were pointing at meat prices at the local store. Employees were instructed to remove them immediately.
I filled up yesterday at a little country gas station for $3.85/gallon and feel like I hit a home run.
