(Reuters) - Tiger Woods turned down a sum in the region of $700-800 million to join the Saudi-backed LIV Golf Invitational Series, the breakaway circuit's CEO Greg Norman told Fox News.
Norman said the offer was made before the Australian was named chief of the controversial series, which is bankrolled by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund.
"That number was out there before I became CEO. So that number has been out there, yes," two-times major winner Norman said in an interview that aired on Monday night.
"Look, Tiger is a needle mover, right? So, of course you're got to look at the best of the best. They had originally approached Tiger before I became CEO. That number is somewhere in that ($700-800 million) neighbourhood."
Former world number one Woods said before last month's British Open that he disagreed with the decision by players to join the LIV Series and compared the circuit, which features huge guaranteed contracts and a 54-hole format, to the senior Champions Tour.
"I think that what they've done is they've turned their back on what has allowed them to get to this position," he said.

Tiger knows about them holes
Probably because he can’t play near to firm because of all his injuries. He’s lucky if he can play at high amateur level these days.
I wonder if his former wife feels the same way about someone turning their back.
It's like watching the Food Channel. At least someone could get injured cutting carrots on a live food competition. In golf, the most exciting thing we get is an alligator sometimes - and they NEVER eat one of the gophers.
Competitive math is more exciting.
The real rumor is he turned down a Billion.
What the heck is LIV?
Is it like a name pronounced liv?
Or is it a Roman numeral 54?
Is it an abbreviation?
Really stupid name for a golf group.
He should have taken the money and ran.
The best part of this is trump gets a chance to payback the PGA for dissing him in 2017 I think for removing a tournament from his club and putting it in Mexico.
The gold digger has done all right for herself, she knows how to play the game.
It is the number 54 because their tournaments are only 54 holes long instead of the normal 72 holes the PGA plays.
DISBELIEVER!!!!!!!!
You are not of the body!
800 million to hobble around the course for a few years, Tiger is an idiot. He can no longer compete at even a C level PGA tournament level, and his chances of winning another major are nil, should have taken the money.
Yep, ad now the LIV will play at Doral, quite sweet.
It depends on your perspective, if you play or are passionate about golf, it’s not boring to watch.
I use to play frequently but still follow the game, I watch a couple of tournaments every year.
The Masters is must see TV for me, especially on Sunday, I reserve all day and watch the entire broadcast.
I usually do the same for the British Open, I enjoy the time it starts and the courses in the UK.
The Players which is played very near where I live, and I’ve played the stadium course where the tournament is played.
What I find interesting about people who find a particular sport boring or uninteresting is their need to trash it especially if they don’t watch it, obviously millions of people around the world watch and enjoy playing.
Hitting a golf ball accurately and consistently is the hardest thing to do in all of sports. It is amazing to watch the pros. You have to play golf to appreciate the sport.
That was the WGC event at Doral(Blue Monster) in Florida. They also canceled the PGA major at his Bedminster club that was suppose to be held in May of this year. This is where last weekend's LIV tour was played..
One could say that about most sports. It is one of the chief complaints leveled at baseball as well. Sports like golf and baseball are slower paced than basketball or (used to be) football. When I watched baseball, I liked the slow pace, and the atmosphere of the ball parks (gave it up when MLB(LM) went woke). I also like the slow pace of golf. I don't have to watch every single moment, and can be doing something while it is on in the background. I've been a fan since at least the early 90's and I never played aside from hitting balls at a driving range, though I did used to play it a lot on my computer.
Also, many (most?) sports are dumb when you think about them deeply. "Boy, he sure is good at hitting a small ball and knocking it into a small hole in fewer strokes!". "Boy, that guy can really toss a ball through a hoop with a net on it!". "Wow, did you see that guy bat that ball and run to a "base"?".
This new LIV spinoff is going to make golf more boring, IMO. With many of the players banished by the PGA for playing with the LIV it will lead to PGA events made up of the junior varsity players (what I call "battles of the nobodies"). I could watch LIV, but it is hard to find and has to be streamed on YouTube. Also, I don't like how they only play 54 holes in the LIV (hence the name). I don't think it was wise of the PGA to tell those players they could not play in both leagues. Though I will be glad that Sergio Garcia won't be in PGA events any more. Can't stand that punk-ass.
