Speaker Nancy Pelosi landed in Taiwan on Tuesday amid warnings from a furious Beijing that any U.S. politician visiting the island nation will 'come to no good end' if they 'play with fire.'
Her Air Force plane - with its distinctive blue and white colors and American flag on the tail - touched down in Taipei at 10:45 pm local time.
The Chinese, meanwhile, backed up their words with a shore of force.
As the speaker's Air Force C40 approached Taipei, Chinese Air Force Su-35 fighter jets were crossing the Taiwan Straits, local media outlets reported.
And chilling footage shared on Chinese social network Weibo appears to show amphibious tanks on the coast of Fujian along the Taiwan Strait. Further footage shows military equipment on the move in the city of Xiamen.
But Taiwan gave Pelosi a warm welcome. The island's tallest building, TAIPEI 101, lit up with a welcome message for Speaker Pelosi and supporters held welcome signs out of the hotel she will reportedly stay in.
Pelosi is the highest-ranking U.S. elected official to visit Taiwan since 1997. The White House is aware of her location.
'The speaker's flying aboard a military aircraft so we'll know,' spokesman John Kirby said at Monday's press briefing when asked how the White House would know if Pelosi touched down in Taiwain.
The speaker's Air Force jet left the Malaysian capital of Kuala Lumpur on Tuesday morning, according to flight-tracking website Flightradar24. The site later crashed after 300,000 people tried to chart Pelosi's journey.
Beijing earlier warned that the United States will 'pay the price' if Pelosi visits Taiwan while Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi said on Tuesday that those U.S. politicians who 'play with fire' on the Taiwan issue will 'come to no good end'.

A pity that all China managed to do with all their bluster was make Pelosi look tough and brave (hell wouldn’t surprise me if whole thing was arranged to help democrats in November). So their “promise” to shoot her plane down turned into little more than them flying a couple planes toward Taiwan then turning tail and running home.
I don’t like Speaker Nancy Pelosi and think she is wrong 99% of the time, this “stunt” proves she has balls of steel that are much larger than Biden’. She just caused XI and his CCP to LOOSE FACE.... this isn’t a small act!
And if she makes it out alive, she will cash in on being the bravest woman in the world!!! That’s even better than “landing in the middle of a firefight”....story!
