Synthetic 'forever chemical' linked to liver cancer
Medical Xpress / Keck School of Medicine of USC / JHEP Reports ^ | August 8, 2022 | Jesse Goodrich, Ph.D. et al

Exposure to a synthetic chemical found widely in the environment is linked to non-viral hepatocellular carcinoma, the most common type of liver cancer, according to a study.

The chemical, called perfluooctane sulfate or PFOS, is one of a class of man-made chemicals called per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, or PFAS. These chemicals, which are used in a wide range of consumer and industrial products, are sometimes called forever chemicals because they break down very slowly and accumulate in the environment and human tissue, including the liver.

Prior research in animals has suggested that PFAS exposure increases the risk of liver cancer, but this is the first study to confirm using human samples.

Researchers found several types of PFAS in the blood samples that were taken before the participant developed liver cancer. The research revealed that the strongest association was between PFOS and liver cancer and that subjects in the top 10% of PFOS exposure were 4.5 times more likely to develop liver cancer than those with the lowest levels of PFOS in their blood.

The research team was also able to illuminate the possible ways in which PFOS altered the normal function of the liver. Their evaluation of the samples found evidence that PFOS appears to alter the normal process of glucose metabolism, bile acid metabolism and the metabolism of a type of amino acid called branched chain amino acids in the liver.

The disruption of normal metabolic processes in the liver can cause more fat to accumulate in the liver, a condition known as non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, or NAFLD.

Some manufacturers have phased out the use of PFOA and PFOS, but because they are long-lasting, PFAS are in drinking water, many food products and the blood of more than 98% of adults in the U.S.

There are water filters that take this out, but we might do better, if concerned, by replacing old Teflon pans with about any of the newer pan coatings in the past ten years.

If you have been alive and eating since the early 70s, the stuff has already accumulated inside your body.

I grew up in Cleveland downwind of the Standard Oil refinery and three steel plants. Not to mention swimming in Lake Erie every summer. I’m toast....

Excerpt from another article that names the products:

PFCs: Global Contaminants
2003

“But in the past five years, the multi-billion dollar “perfluorochemical” (PFC) industry, which underpins such world-famous brands as Teflon, Stainmaster, Scotchgard and Gore-Tex, has emerged as a regulatory priority for scientists and officials at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).”

Always something caused by capitalist business.

That being said, years ago 3M found that the active ingredient in Scotchguard™ didn't break down in the environment.

There was absolutely no evidence that this was in any way harmful, and being darned near chemically inert, no reason to expect that it was on any level.

What did 3M do?

They pulled Scotchguard™ from the market. There was no requirement that they do this. There was no expectation that there ever would be a compelling reason to remove this chemical from their products.

They walked away from a very profitable and highly useful product out of a simple and straightforward abundance of caution.

If this is the first you've heard of this, consider, they did the right thing simply because it was the right thing, and didn't feel the slightest need to virtue signal.

Major props to 3M in my book!

The currently marketed Scotchguard™ was long since reformulated to exclude PFAS.

After watching this, I bought a Zerowater filter. But I haven't used it. I bought it in case of SHTF.

If it’s inert enough to last ‘forever’, how can it be carcinogenic?

In other words the Organic folk were right all along . Chemicals come with problems . The manipulation of the natural always carries a penalty . The whole gene manipulation thing is a Pandora’s Box that will eventually bite us right in the butt . And you just thought the raid on Trumps place was the worst thing you would hear today .

Activated charcoal (with a fair amount of media), ion-exchange, and reverse osmosis can all do well with these, from my reading.

https://nicholas.duke.edu/news/not-all-home-drinking-water-filters-completely-remove-toxic-pfas

I personally have a heavy undersink KDF 85 filter with activated charcoal for our kitchen. It is supposed to reduce these types of compounds by 96%, but reverse osmosis can do even better. We have a good municipal water supply and really got it just for taste and some peace of mind. It lasts three years with no maintenance.
