As Vancouver's Downtown Eastside tent eviction drags on, community workers say they feel blindsided

A week before the City of Vancouver decided to serve eviction notices on the occupants of makeshift shelters on Hastings Street in the Downtown Eastside, they awarded a number of community organizations combined contracts worth $50,000 to make the area safe for residents.

The organizations say they entered into the arrangement to help remove garbage and flammable materials on the assumption that the city was committed to helping them support the unhoused residents that were living there.

But after the city's fire chief issued eviction orders, they say they feel like they were "set up to fail," and they don't know what the city expects of them if the residents are to be forcibly moved.

(snip)

Vancouver Mayor Kennedy Stewart and Fire Chief Karen Fry both said eviction plans had been in the works for a week before the order came down on July 25. But for the residents and the community workers who had been issued contracts to maintain the living spaces, it came as a total surprise.

"We were blindsided by the announcement," said Brittany Graham, executive director of the Vancouver Area Network of Drug Users (VANDU).

Graham said the organization has been providing the residents with essential supplies since then

Seattle would be a good place; they love bums and all they bring.

I lived and worked in Vancouver 1982-85. It was the most beautiful city I've ever been! (I was in international sales so I know of comparisons).

What has happened to such a lovely city is a crime, honestly. All at the hand of far left politicians and now, even a more woke citizenry.

>>THE VANCOUVER AREA NETWORK OF DRUG USERS

I say give them all the free fentanyl they want, and no narcan allowed to anyone that accepts it. Problem will solve itself pretty quickly.

If you ask me, the “community organizations” who are abetting that vagrancy are pernicious.

Once decent, beautiful cities are now third world garbage dumps thanks to these worthess odious smelly bums and the blithering idiots that mollycoddle them. They need to be rounded up, convicted of vagrancy, and put on chain gangs.

Sadly the foolish voters put terrible politicians in who encourage and defend this behavior.

“”residents are to be forcibly moved.””

So... I pitch a tent, wherever I want and, presto! I am a ‘resident.’ Nonprofits deliver my food (no Amazon necessary here). In some waaaaay wacky leftist cities, they will even deliver my ‘medicine’ (heroin, alcohol, etc.) if I register for any kind of assistance, I can qualify for a ‘free’ phone, tablet, and even my own Hotspot. (what’s next, ‘free’ Netflix and Prime?) if anyone complains, I can state that, today, I feeeeel like a woman, and call the complainers Transphobic.

We lived in Vancouver BC in 1998-99 for 18 months...during that time they started giving out free, clean needles to usets...and the beggars on the street started getting very belligerent...Vancouver brought it on themselves, just like Portland, OR, Seattle, etc.
