Friday afternoon, the Grand Canyon Regional Communications Center received a report of a visitor who fell from the rim west of the Bright Angel Point Trail on the North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park, KTLA sister station KTVX reports.

Responding rangers located the body of a 44-year-old man approximately 200 ft. below the rim. The visitor was reportedly off the trail when he accidentally fell off the edge.

The man has not yet been identified, and additional details have not yet been released.

Rangers say visitors should remain on designated trails and walkways, staying a safe distance from the edge of the rim.

The North Rim is something like 8000 feet in elevation.

amazing how few have taken the plunge. Probably many fewer than those who have actually traveled from some distance to leap off the Golden Gate Bridge.

GC averages 11 killed per year. But most are accidents rather than intentional.

GGB used to be 30 per year, but I think the netting slowed it down some. I assume those are pretty much all intentional.

“We used to refer to those as “Texas Tourist stops” because it seemed like lots of folks from Texas just wanted to see all the points they were “supposed” to see, take a quick pic and drive on to the next one.”

Wife and I had a laugh at all the Texas license plates last time we were Sedona.

You would think people from such flat, featureless land would be a bit more interested.

Now, if we could get all the California types to just stop, and then keep going.

We went to the Louvre Museum in Paris one Summer. It was hot in there! Saw the Mona Lisa from behind a mob of people, and found our way out. Same principle I guess. Must have been on someone’s bucket list?

He’ll never do that again. And why did he do that (get on the edge) in the first (and last) place?
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
A much less painful way to see what’s over the edge is to rent one of the donkeys to go down in the canyon!

Your corpse will be easier with a helmet and a bright safety vest.

One of my favorite Flintstones episodes was the time they went on vacation and decided to go to the Grand Canyon. After driving all that way, all there was was just a tiny stream of water with a sign next to it that said “Grand Canyon”.

Fred: “Is that it? We drove all that way for this little stream?”

Barney: “Well, it might not look like much now, but they say in a few million years, it’s going to be really something!”

Evil Knievel couldn’t Jump the Grand Canyon,
splashed in the Snake river though and probably made a
Million.

Almost did that myself. My beer bottle slid away from me and just disappeared over the edge. I held my breath and waited for the crash of glass, when it came about 4 seconds later I gently climbed back to the path. Dumbest thing I ever did.

[Clark Griswold had the right idea. Take a quick look safely away from the edge and get the heck out of there. Make sure you stop at the gift shop on the way out. ]

[I have a healthy respect ( fear) for heights.
So my visit to the Canyon’s edge was from many feet away……]

This is what, in technical jargon, we call an evolutionary adaptation. The ones without that fear are all extinct.

I once stopped a friend I was camping with from going over a sixty foot high cliff. It was night and there was a full moon. We were drinking and looking at the moon when he raised his arms and kept saying “the moon, the moon...” while walking straight towards the cliff edge. So I ran and grabbed his shirt and arm. He thanked me a lot for saving his life. Later he became a US Marine.

In India they call them “Patel Photos.” Jump on the tour bus, go to the next spot, take a picture, get back on bus...

When we were there about 20 years ago, there was a book for sale in the gift shop titled “Death At the Grand Canyon.” There was a story in the book about a guy who jumped about 10 feet onto a rock whose surface was covered with coins thrown by tourists. He was dancing around and singing when he slipped and fell hundreds of feet to his death in front of horrified onlookers.
