Tolkien admired Scandanavian mythology, he wanted to create a mythical history for England. Black elves, trans-dwarves (female dwarves with beards!), Asian characters were not part of his vision, not really because he was Catholic, but because they didn’t fit into an English pre-history.

According to the extra material on the extended version DVD of the movie The Two Towers, Peter Jackson nearly fell into this trap. He was going to portray Arwen as a warrior, and even filmed scenes of her fighting at Helm's Deep. Luckily for viewers, better reasoning prevailed and he decided to move closer to the book's characterization of her for his movies.
