Rep. Thomas Massie: Few will mention Article 11 (of the NATO treaty), because it exposes the LIE that Article 5 itself can obligate the US to war

@RepThomasMassie

There will be much discussion of NATO Article 5 today, but few will mention Article 11, because it exposes the lie that Article 5 itself can obligate the US to war. Article 11 shows Article 5 does not preempt the Constitutional requirement that the full Congress votes on war.

Unfortunately, the War Powers Act would allow a US President to respond militarily before Congress could act.

Interesting as a treaty is only ratified by the senate not the full congress. But treaties do have to be honored. Interesting conundrum.

But it’s like Russia illegally taking land from Ukraine. Who is going to stop them? Same if we chose not to honor treaties. Who is going to make us?

He's wrong.

Article V does indeed legally obligate the U.S to go to war. There's no way around that because the Treaty and its obligations were lawfully ratified by the Senate.

What he should have said is that Congressional action would still be required for us to act on that obligation, which is probably correct.

Exactly.

Massie is a very smart guy and sees what they’re trying to pull here. The Neocons are pretending Russia is responsible for blowing up the pipelines and hoping to use that as an excuse to enact Article 5 and drag NATO into this war.

“BRUSSELS (Reuters) - NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said on Thursday that a deliberate attack against allies’ infrastructure would be met with a determined response, following what it called acts of “sabotage” on the Nord Stream pipelines.”

Well, he's right that to declare war Congress must declare war.

Doesn't mean much with respect to engaging US forces if you spend $1 trillion a year to give the President a huge military because Congress believes the threat warrants it.

Substantial US air and ground forces are in Poland: does anyone believe that they'll wait for Congress to declare war before engaging if the balloon goes up?

100% false...and shame on you for presuming American sovereignty can usurped like that.

That's silly.

Nobody is proposing having US armed forces shoot at Russia EXCEPT if Russians uses nuclear weapons, at which point all bets are off.

US sovereignty isn't usurped if the US Senate ratifies a treaty signed by the President.

Is Article V the one that says if a good, dues-paying member of NATO (such as Ukraine) were to be attacked by a meanie (like Russia) then all the other NATO members would be obligated to join in defense of their fellow NATO partner?

Because ... you know ... I see a problem ...

If they succeed they may be surprised to find their enemy is not Russia.

Hasn’t every “war” since Vietnam completely bypassed congress?

The Biden regime isn’t worried about Congress, they assume they can get the votes there. It’s the EU (NATO) they want to force into this war via treaty obligations.

Russia will never resort to tactical nukes unless their backs are against the wall and enemy forces are threatening their border. Ukraine alone will never be able to accomplish that without NATO being drawn in.

With THIS Senate, and THIS "President", U.S. Sovereignty has been destroyed, and there is only the USSC (which is ALSO Deep State)....or, We The People to someday take it back.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said on Thursday that a deliberate attack against allies’ infrastructure would be met with a determined response, following what it called acts of “sabotage” on the Nord Stream pipelines.”

Except Russia actually OWNS and operates and built NS2. NATO does NOT own it.
And the attack on the pipeline was carried out by the Dementia Joe government.
So NATO is going to attack the US for that?
Chuckle.

“If they succeed they may be surprised to find their enemy is not Russia.”

The US taking out the Nordstream pipeline has left Europe (especially Germany) in a very precarious situation, and despite what the EU may be saying publicly, you can be sure they are not happy with the US forcing their hand. There’s no popular support among the European people for a direct involvement in a war against Russia and their leaders know this. I fully expect the US to do a false flag op and blame it on Russia to change this sentiment if necessary.

It’s obvious the Neocons are desperate at this point and will go all out to bring NATO into this as soon as possible. Destroying the Nordstream pipelines was an overt act of war, showing that the US is willing to do whatever it takes for NATO involvement even if it goes against the interests of Europe.
