I'm assuming that MLB has a bunch of identical balls on hand for any given game. So how do you tell them apart?
What's to stop a fan from producing a foul ball that he caught earlier in the game and then claiming that this was the home run ball?
I may be wrong, but I think that if there is a possibility of a record being broken - or equaled, the balls are marked in some way.
