158,936,000: Record Number of Employed, But Labor Force Participation Drops 0.1%

Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell warned last month that raising interest rates to cool inflation is likely to dampen economic growth -- "and there will very likely be some softening of labor market conditions," he said.

But there's no significant softening evident in Friday's jobs/employment report.

On Friday, the Labor Department's Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that the number of employed Americans in September rose by 204,000 to 158,936,000, a record high. The previous record, 158,735,000, was set in December 2019 when Donald Trump was president.

Maybe later. Right now Powell’s busy jacking up rates so they’ll get laid off...

That came from the U.N., did it not? Powell must have listened to his true masters.

We must discount any gubmit employees or congresscritters from the “employed” list, since none of them are doing any real work and their positions do not count as jobs.

If 1 person can be counted as 5 votes, can 1 one person be counted as 5 jobs?

I don’t buy the labor participation numbers. They are probably counting the homeless working for precincts handing out flyers too.

So where the hell is everybody? Why are stores that used to be open from 6:00 am until 11:00 pm only open from 9-9? Why does it take weeks to get an appliance person to come out to your house? I’m going to have to throw the BS flag on this one. Inflated numbers prior to the Mid-Terms

Good.

“Right now Powell’s busy jacking up rates so they’ll get laid off...”

After this report, it’s almost certain Powell will keep jacking up rates. He doesn’t have much choice.

The stock market sure thinks so. It’s taking a huge beating today.

We to recognize when credit is due. As much as I hate to admit it, Biden and Democrats have increased employment by 201,000 since 2019.

I wonder where all these people are working? I still see “Now Hiring” and “Help Wanted” signs everywhere, and many stores have reduced staff by using self-service checkout and kiosks.

It’s going to take 5-6% unemployment to kill inflation.

You go into a bank, and one - maybe two - teller stations are open, out of six or eight. You go to a supermarket and three or four checkout lines out of eight are open. After Covid, many restaurants are still operating at reduced hours. My local restaurant/lounge is now closed on Tuesday, and the kitchen closes at 2 pm four days a week. Another popular restaurant that used to be open until nine or ten pm now closes at 3 pm every day. And many businesses that were shut down during Covid never reopened, although some are now reopening under new ownership. And many corporate chains have closed dozens or even hundreds of locations. I wonder if most of the new jobs are as delivery people for places like amazon, doordash, and grubhub.
