A 42-year-old-man was hunting Elk in Idaho when a mountain lion emerged from the wilderness and began stalking him.
Jared Erickson - from Paradise, Utah, just south of the Gem state - was lucky to get away with his life after the encounter with the lion in which he was forced to fire his gun twice.
After the second shot he was able to scare off the mountain lion, which then returned into the wilderness disappointed.
Erickson pulled out his pistol and phone upon noticing the big cat. With his left hand he filmed the lion as it moved menacingly towards him, one slow stride at a time.
In his right hand Erickson holds a Glock pistol pointed at the lion, prepared in case it chose to strike.
During the video Erickson can be heard breathing heavily as he moved backwards with the gun in hand.
'Get back,' he can was heard warning the lion firmly.
The lion begins to increase its pace until once about 20 feet away it lurches forward with both front legs extended. At that very moment the Erickson fires a singlehanded shot with the gun in his right hand.
Its unclear whether it was a warning shot or Erickson was aiming for the cat, but it dashes a few meters before turning back to face Erickson once more.

Why didn’t he shoot it with his muzzle loader?
I read Glock; do they make Daringers?
I’ve actually encountered a Mountain lion in the wild. beautiful big cats.
The guy was in the cat’s territory and I’m very glad he didn’t kill it. The Cat likes Elk too, and it has every right to them.
He had a Glock 40. But just being charitable, there were a few things he could have done better. One, not worry about the camera right then. Two, backing away from it as you make small whimpering pleas. Three, when it was clearly on the stalk and within 20 feet, aim carefully and fire.
He was lucky,
Shooting one handed so you can film with your phone. SMH...
I read elsewhere that it was a .40 Glock. No word on the handle’s color.
the cat likes meat
he could have been lunch
He said it was a Glock...
Ibbet there is a federal bureaucrat somewhere busily trying to fabricate some charge to bring against him...
I have a Taurus .44 magnum for these type of trips.
The last resort should be to shoot them in their own hunting grounds, I’m glad he just scared it off.
I do love wildlife and pets with a passion.
My thoughts exactly. No need to kill that cat.
How do they know the cat was disappointed? Maybe he smelled Utah Romney crap and decided this ain’t worth the trouble.
“People commented on the video expressing how lucky he was to have had the gun and to have survived.”
Yeah, nothing but luck he was carrying the Glock. No preparation involved.
I’ve encountered them in the Santa Cruz Mountains and Mt Madonna Park.
I pull my Kbar and march right at them.
They leave.
Guess they know better than to fight anyone with opposable thumbs...
My kid did stupid stuff with his car and had to walk home up 8 miles of canyon mountain roads and the cougars would stalk him.
He bought an ir thermometer thing and made them chase the laser dot far away until they were to tired to eat him.
But the human cougars still chase and want to eat him.
David Paulides preaches it. Do NOT go into the forest unarmed. Especially Yosemite which is number one in north America in disappearances.
