Nick Saban Calls for Consistency in Officiating
Bama Central on FanNation ^ | Oct 17, 2022 | Katie Windham

A pass interference call wiped out a crucial interception for the Crimson Tide in the loss at Tennessee.

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Alabama has officially been penalized more than any other team in the country.

After the Crimson Tide got called for a program-record 17 penalties Saturday against Tennessee, it's no surprise that penalties were a major theme of Nick Saban's Monday press conference.

Whether it be pass interference, which wiped out a game-sealing interception for the second week in a row, or pre-snap infractions, or special teams penalties that negated big gains, Saban is frustrated with it all.

Depending on the type of infraction, whether or not to throw a flag is a judgement call by the officials in college football, which Saban understands, but the main thing he's asking for his consistency among the officials, particularly when it comes to pass interference.

"Look, my big thing is just consistency," Saban said when asked if he thought pass intereference should be reviewable. "Just call it the same for everybody. And it’s hard to define exactly what you can and can’t do. I would rather see that happen. In the NFL, they defined exactly what you can and can’t do and it’s a really, really difficult judgement call, but you knew exactly what you could and couldn’t do. I think that would be beneficial."

The tide lost the game, the Vols won. Any ref call or lack of call should not have stopped Bama from winning.

Yes there were questionable calls, but if Bama was good enough, they should have won regardless. Great game for the Vols.

That said, was it targeting? And was it facemask interference? Maybe regardless, the Tide could have won the game.

Same goes for roughing the passer, they should just make quarterbacks wear dresses, like Jack Lambert suggested.

I watched the game as a Bama fan and saw calls called poorly. Both teams have reason to be a little miffed at the officiating. Especially in the era of video replay.

Even we didn’t give up that many points to Tennessee.

Maybe Bama’s defense is worse than ours.

Look up the term “Bama Privilege.” I don’t ever want to hear Alabama or Auburn complain about officiating. Ever.

Alabama’s defense this year is suspect, especially on the back end. They were torched on too many big plays.

But it is hard to replace NFL-caliber starters year after year.

Think the NCAA champ this year comes from the B1G?

("1" big being Ohio State)

Yes there were questionable calls, but if Bama was good enough, they should have won regardless.

Sounds like a democrat arguing about elections.

If the republicans were just good enough they would have won even if we cheated.

Don't buy it.

In sports or in life.

Be consistent.

And if you can not put aside your personal feelings and go strictly on the merits then find a new job. Perhaps lawn care would be a good field. Or wood chopping.

After what Michigan did to Penn State, who slaughtered Auburn, I’m starting to think that way. Just hope it’s Michigan.

He shouldn’t cite the NFL, after last week’s call of “roughing the passer” for a simple tackle of a QB where the defensive play even took the brunt of the impact by hitting the ground first.

Or the obvious missed tripping call on the Chiefs trying to trip Josh Allen.

I watched. Lots of bad calls - more than the average game.

ThT said. The Tide had 17 penalties and lost by themselves.

We need equity officiating! Which team had more black players?

Penn State could use far better coaching.
