I met Karpov, popularly referred to as “the fetus,” in 1988 when he played an early round world championship match with the Icelander Hjartarson in Seattle. I was running the demonstration board.

Karpov was one of the true greats in his day. Being able to squeeze out wins from near drawn positions, like Magnus does today, that was genius.
