A Florida man has been arrested after deputies found him driving erratically and located a box of cookies that wasn’t what it seemed.
34-year-old Steven Robert Thomas was pulled over after a member of the Highland County Sheriff’s Office Tactical Anti-Crime Team saw him driving erratically on Lakeview Drive in Sebring around 9:30 p.m. on Nov. 10.
Deputies say he drifted over the center line several times, and then almost clipped another car when he made a turn.
Thomas claimed the car was having “steering issues,” which may have been true, but the bigger issue was that his license was expired, according to deputies.
“An even bigger issue arose when K-9 Lady took a walk around the car and let deputies know she smelled something inside. While they may like to eat them, none of our dogs are trained to alert to the scent of baked goods, so you can probably see where this is going,” said Highlands County Sheriff’s Office.
Investigators say the cookie box was found concealed inside a backpack. It contained 30.2 grams of crack cocaine, 28.2 grams of MDMA, three oxycodone pills, and four pills that tested positive for fentanyl. There was also $300 in cash and several unused baggies.
“Put that all together, and you have the recipe for drug dealing,” said HCSO. “The loaded .45-caliber pistol under the front seat was kind of the icing on the cookie, so to speak, since Thomas is a convicted felon.”
