Katelyn Boss is a 22-year-old server at a sports bar in Salt Lake City, Utah.
She thought it was a waste of time at first. The tips were bad, and her base wage was $2.13 an hour.
Then she tried putting her hair in pigtails to get higher tips from male customers — and it worked.
When I first started working as a waitress at a sports bar and grill, I was struggling to make tips. It almost felt like I was wasting my time. I was making so little money, because the minimum wage in Utah for tipped employees is $2.13 per hour.
I saw the 'pigtail theory' for making more tips on TikTok So I went on TikTok to look at what other waitresses were doing to make higher tips. I was looking for any ideas and tricks I could use, and I came across the "#pigtailtheory" trend. In it, women realized that if they wore their hair in pigtails, they made more money in tips.
I was kind of surprised by the idea, but I decided to just give it a try. I put my hair in pigtails and went into the bar for my waitressing shift. That was the night I made my first $100 tip.

Earl Simmons isn’t rapping anymore…
Are younger waitresses more likely to “need the money” thank older ones?
Somehow I doubt that.
It’s a symmetrical hairdo.
Pretty much.
I disagree. Hooters has some EXCELLENT wings!
She is a miserable excuse for a human being.
She will die alone at an old age. Meanwhile, nicer girls who marry and have a family, will be surrounded by people who love them. Even if she has a family, they will likely steal her blind and usher her off the some Day Kill facility, where the average patient dies in eight months... even if they are totally active and healthy when carted off; it’s a process to kill off the old and her kind of human scum are responsible.
That was my impression.
Every intelligent person maximizes their assets, whatever it is they have.
Some have brains. Some have looks. Some have skill. And so on.
I once knew a salesman from Australia, and he had the most over the top Aussie accent, and was a good looking, big rugby player kind of guy, very good natured, and Americans are suckers for a good Aussie accent. We just are.
Well, I went to a conference and saw the guy (who I liked) and went over to talk to him, but he was engaged in conversation, so I politely waited just out of range until he was free.
But I was close enough to hear his conversation, which had absolutely no Aussie accent at all! I nearly fell over!
The thing is-he wasn’t exploiting people in an ill-tempered or exploitative way-he just knew that people liked him more when they heard his accent, and he was likeable. So, he was keeping with who he was, he was internally consistent, just enhancing himself.
In the case of this woman, it is inconsistent, mean, and tawdry. She doesn’t like men who find her attractive but does it to get more money out of her. It is greedy, dishonest, and grasping.
I admire a woman who likes men, knows she is attractive, and enhances her appearance in sexually attractive ways because everyone wins by it including her. This sad sack of a woman in the article suffers but gets money for it. The difference is huge to me.
You can probably tell, I don’t like people like her.
I do the same. Put zero on the credit card tip line, but leave a nice cash tip. Bugger the IRS sideways.
Where she will complain about the tips not being as good, and dressing sexy not helping as much as at the sports bar.
More than just the pigtails, I think her increased tips came from an attitude adjustment, where she realized that getting customers to like her would increase tips.
What she REALLY should do, at 22, is find some guy with a decent job which other girls may be ignoring, strive to make him happy enough to get him to marry her, and raise some babies.
I’m guessing this is a stock photo rather than a pic of the author.
Yeah and “will that be all?” instead of “Is that it?”
Hahaha...that’s pretty funny! I don’t particularly care for older women wearing pigtails. It doesn’t really fit.
I have never been a fan of anyone, male or female, who wears clothes or hairstyles that they can’t carry off. Some people do carry those thing, and that is okay.
Nothing is stupider than an older person coloring their hair with pink and green, or an old guy wearing clothes normally only a teenager would wear.
But hey, that’s me.
Being cute results in better tips. Been there; done that — in the ‘60s. If pigtails add to the cute factor, go for it.
I am all for a woman doing that.
But doing it then complaining about it and being disgusted by it certainly casts a different light on it for me.
I’m a 62 yr old female. Everyone and I mean everyone I come in to contact with guesses 42. Both my parents were proofed for 18 well into their late 30s. There’s no way I would try to pull off pigtails or anything for the under 50 set.
Yep. She’s trying to prove “systemic sexism.”
I’ve got a golf ball stuck in my garden hose I need taken care of.
