If it is Sirius, 16 light years away, then we have a problem. If it is Betelgeuse, 300 light years away, we have a spectacular light show.

Good point, even better as Sirius is half as far at 8.6 ly not 16 ly, and Betelgeuse is twice as far at 642 ly not 300. You probably were just mixing up how many frequent flyer ly you get for a round trips and one-ways.
Speaking of Sirius... Have you looked at it the last few nights. WOW. It is putting on a show. And nice views of Mars and Jupiter.
