RIP to a great athlete.
Wonder what Terry "that's horse paste, man" Bradshaw is thinking right now?

Watching how hard Franco Harris played, I am guessing chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) played a role.

IIRC, Franco was known for sometimes going out of bounds to avoid contact. Considering the length and quality of his career, this may have been a good strategy.

Indeed. Franco was a “good Democrat” who openly opposed his GOP conservative friend Lynn Swann for Pa. governor.

Clear evidence of CTE brain damage.

He actively campaigned for Fetterman. How could anyone support that retard is beyond me. You have to have an IQ of 10.

Ah, no. Apparently his in-his-sleep death came as a surprise to his friends and family.
Much more likely the jabs, his time simply being up, or a combination of the two.

Safe and effective death.

He was a decent running back on a great team, but there were a number greater than him in that era, which was FULL of great running backs.
OJ Simpson, Mercury Morris, Lawrence McCutcheon, Lydell Mitchell (who Franco blocked for in college), Chuck Foreman, Walter Payton, Greg Pruitt, Terry Metcalf. Franco had a great O-Line, and lots of other weapons for defenses to concentrate on. When you have Swann and Stallworth to worry about, you cannot key on Harris, who was good but not elite, in my opinion.

One wonders how many more yards Payton would have gotten if he played with a decent offensive line for most of those years.

Payton was also an excellent an self-sacrificing blocker, too. He left us way too early.
