My older brother was drafted but the day before he was due to report, the whole thing was called off. Mom cried a lot for a few days. At first, because she thought that was the last she’d see of him, and then tears of joy that he didn’t need to go anymore.

This recording was in 1983, but The Band’s Music from Big Pink was issued in 1968 and they spanned the ‘70s

Long Black Veil - The Band

if you know The Band you’ll notice that they aren’t playing their usual instruments. Most versatile musicians ever

I won the draft lottery with a #356. I don’t regret that they didn’t take me. The American role in the war was winding down at that point, only two of my high school classmates ended up in Vietnam as far as I know.

I worked with a few guys who had just returned from there and some did have trouble adjusting to being back home. Unlike previous wars soldiers didn’t return as a unit, they were just plucked out solo and suddenly found themselves stateside, alone as a civilian with no one to relate to. No decompression from the intensity of the war zone. I recall one who had also had his wife dump him. I really worried that guy might do himself in.

Great live rendition of Veil there from ‘83. One of my favorite Band tunes. Big Pink was outstanding and groundbreaking, but their second release (“The Brown Album” in ‘69) was their masterpiece.

Robbie whining / bragging in The Last Waltz about being on the road for 16 years as if it were a superhuman feat is laughable nowadays.

I listened to channel 31 over the Thanksgiving weekend to the new “Live at the Fillmore” box set, which I promptly bought. Tom, his band and his guests all sound so great.

Yes, it’s been a lot of fun listening to the show on 31. So many great songs. We bought a different set of his lives version. The Fillmore is a great place though. Maybe we will get that set next. Enjoy it!
