Spending at retail stores fell in December by the most in a year as consumer demand cools in the face of stubbornly high inflation and rising interest rates.

Retail sales, a measure of how much consumers spent on a number of everyday goods, including cars, food and gasoline, declined 1.1% in December, the Commerce Department said Thursday. Economists surveyed by Refinitiv expected sales to fall 0.8%.

The other day, a group of economists complained that older children who have returned to live with their parents were causing inflation cuz they had money to spend.

Dollar ($1.25) Tree stores in my area are having trouble even getting stock.

Sent someone to get $20 of various stuff from there yesterday. They returned with nothing because none of it was available - empty shelves for the most part.

I will say local Indiana Aldi and BJ’s Wholesale have looked pretty well stocked the first two weeks of 2023.

It’s about 5 dollars here in New England for a pound of butter these days. Almost 11 dollars for the large 64 oz tub of peanut butter.

Brutal food inflation.

I am assuming these numbers include the most important retail store - Amazon? I was at a local store the other day trying to pick up a monitor that was on sale. The staff had no idea how to find it and it took 45 minutes for them to finally find the damn thing for me. And people wonder why brick and mortar stores are failing. Could have just done it all on Amazon and would have got it in a couple days.

This doesn’t make sense. Biden said inflation has been stopped. He wouldn’t lie, would he?

Karine just said this is a historic economic recovery.

It's easy to claim historic economic recovery after you engineer the historic economic collapse.
