Puyallup man accused in substation vandalism is released from custody

One of the two men charged with vandalizing electrical substations in Washington state over the holidays to cover a burglary was ordered released from federal custody Friday to seek substance abuse help.

A federal judge issued the order for Matthew Greenwood, 32, after renewed efforts by his attorney to get Greenwood into a drug-treatment facility, The News-Tribune reported.

Greenwood and Jeremy Crahan, 40, both of Puyallup, have been charged with conspiracy to damage energy facilities. According to the complaint, Greenwood told investigators after his arrest that the two knocked out power so they could burglarize a business and steal from the cash register.

The attacks on Dec. 25 caused at least $3 million in damages and left about 30,000 people without power, according to court documents and utility officials.

Greenwood was also charged with possession of a short-barreled rifle and short-barreled shotgun.

U.S. District Judge Robert J. Bryan granted Greenwood’s release on an appearance bond, or the promise to show up to future hearings and abide by conditions, including electronic monitoring and mandated drug treatment.

Bryan noted the court was taking a risk, telling Greenwood: “It’s up to you to be sure that the risk is well-taken.”

Assistant U.S. attorney Todd Greenberg opposed Greenwood’s release, noting Greenwood’s alleged disregard for community safety.

“Is this someone the court can trust to be safe in this community?” Greenberg said. “I think the answer to that is ‘no.’”

You’re in the throes of substance abuse, so that means we can accept your promise to do better. So go in peace, and be sure to write about your progress.

It makes sense, meth-heads want money, but there’s that pesky alarm system in the way. Take out the power, wait for the batteries on the alarm system to die, THEN break in.

Crazy, stupid mistake. And taking into account not just the $3MM dollar value to the utility, but the societal impact, this guy should be doing 15 to 20 years. Not only is it a perfect certainty that several people died because of the failure of electronic medical devices to keep them alive, but certainly another half million or more in food was destroyed from the lack of refrigeration.

So instead of it being terrorism or some deep state plot, in effect it was an act of stupidity.

Insanity!

A real domestic terrorist gets caught shutting down power to 30,000 people and he gets a “get out of jail free” card...

A Christian praying in front of an abortion mill is classified as a major domestic terrorist and is treated brutally for years...

I’m hoping the substation burhlar shuts down the entire state next time...

Wah! He’s a victim of his drug habit! Now all you people whose power he knocked out, will be paying for his drug rehab stay. Isn’t liberalism wonderful?

How is it they are charged with a conspiracy when the guy admits to doing it?

Wouldn’t it be simpler to take out the power to the building? This is a BS excuse. How many years do I get in the Federal Pen if I have a short barreled Rifle and a sawed off shotgun in my possession after doing this? 25 years minimum. It hasn’t even been a year, and I am sure the best cure for drug addiction, is 25 years not being around them, not letting him out.

This is not an effect of stupidity, this is part of the planned attack on society. We need MORE prisons and prisoners, not less. If they get too full, execute the worst ones. If the prisons are being emptied out, arrest the homeless and fill them back up. Clean up the streets, give them a place to sleep and food to drink.
