Green tea has therapeutic potential against COVID-19: Why not use it in medicine? (EGCG)
Medical Xpress / University of Virginia / Phytomedicine Plus ^ | Feb. 6, 2023 | Eric Williamson / Biswanath Dinda et al

It's time for tea: More than 30 research papers published between 2000 and 2022 have confirmed that a chemical component found in green tea can help fight various types of coronaviruses, including variants of COVID-19.

A trio of scientists including Manikarna Dinda compiled the takeaways in a review article published this month.

The goal of the collaborative report was to pave the way for tea's translation into antiviral medications. The chemical compound found in green tea—epigallocatechin gallate, or EGCG for short—has been of interest to medical researchers for many years. Now, the interest has grown.

"Recently, EGCG's strong antiviral activity against SARS-CoV-2 infection in in vitro models [outside of a living organism] potentiates EGCG's use in the treatment of COVID-19 patients," Dinda said.

However, because of its low availability to the whole body, due to poor absorption in the gut and extensive liver processing, it's use as a therapeutic agent has been limited.

The researchers see a greater role for the use of EGCG in mouth and throat wash formulations that reduce the viral load in the salivary glands, and in precision medicines "if its bioavailability in human plasma is enhanced with dru

Thank you for reminding me it’s time for my afternoon cup of green tea.

Watch my cards and chips, I’ll be right back.

Absolutely, CM our good FRiend.

And, it's good to keep in mind that brewing temperature can affect the potency of the EGCG flavanoids. Don't toss a green tea bag into a cup of boiling hot water. The high temp will deactivate the therapeutic effects.

Thanks, as always, for posting these valuable articles!

I drink 8 decaffeinated cups of green tea a day. It pairs well with single malt and a cigar. To living a healthy lifestyle!

A year ago, my wife and I had a mild variant Covid, and one of our current RN relatives recommended green tea and replacing our coffee with it for a week or so.

We did fine and with our latest Variant after a Thanksgiving dinner, she still recommended green tea. It seemed to work well again.

I try to have a cup daily.
It’s an evening treat after the morning coffee binge.

green tea benefits include reducing cortisol, so I’m not surprised. Still, I’ve avoided flus and colds for over ten years by ensuring my vit D levels are high.

According to Examine.com, Quercetin augments the absorption of Resveratrol and Green Tea Catechins. I take quercetin paired nightly with several other supplements, such as EGCG, Olive Leaf Extract, nattokinase, Berberine, Black Cumin seed oil, and other things that I don’t take on a daily basis.

I drank Turkey Hill Green Tea Mango with Vodka throughout the pandemic. So that’s my story and I’m sticking with it.

Why not use it in medicine? No profit for Big Pharma of course! EGCG is also good for the prostate https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2789276/

If you look at the effective doses for many Japanese studies, it’s 6 or 7 (hot) cups of day. I can’t reach that, so I do take green tea extract supplements in hope that they might help.

BTW, the Japanese have lots of mouth and throat-related cancers because of their hot drinking habits.
