The Boulder police were a bad joke. They went after the parents from day one. They ignored all the evidence that pointed to an intruder. The detective that was brought in proved an intruder could have entered the house through the basement. Boulder police ruled that out but the detective proved them wrong by going into the basement through the window they said nobody could get through.

This case is used as an example of how not to do it when murder cops get around to discussing such things. Lots of stones throw at the Boulder cops. Mostly “it isn’t always the father or other family member.” DNA was still a “new” tool to LEO’s then.
