I bet that somehow a fighting cock was introduced into his flock. A lot of people don’t know what they are and don’t distinguish them from ordinary chickens.
Fighting cocks have spurs, long sharp claws, coming from the back of their legs, and they are bred to fight and kill.
They are selectively bred for aggression, killer instinct and survival. They must be segregated from other animals when they aren’t fighting.
I was on FR at the time of the murder.
It happened to me when I was involved in a project for someone’s PhD in animal behavior/training, or something like that (it was decades ago).
We devised a little ‘play’ for the chickens to perform, and they all trained perfectly - that rooster learned to walk a tightrope, pull a tiny wagon, etc.
But when I tried to get it used to its little costume, it became enraged.
I decided then that I’d only ever keep chickens for eggs - roosters aren’t the best eating, anyway :-)
I have birds. It’s clear why they’ve survived 500 million years.
It is a fun word! Reading Patrick O’Brien’s Captain Jack Aubrey/Stephen Maturin novels will introduce you to a slew of them!

When my son was very young he always wanted to go out when I was feeding the chickens and gathering eggs.
We had bought some mixed chicks and the roosters were getting to the young ornery adult stage. One day one tried to jump him but I intercepted it. I told him that if the chickens were mean to him, we would eat them. I saw the light come on when the concept of those birds running around out there and chicken nuggets came together. Next day one did jump him.
We learned about the phrase “running around like a chicken with its head cut off” a few days later.
"It's the kill cone for you, rooster boy!"
So, it was the pit bull of poultry, you're saying.
Oh, so that’s how it’s done, at on small farms.
They are not the best eating, what was the costume.

My grandad used to hang them upside down from a clothesline and dispatch them with a very sharp knife. When the whole family was together there were 14 of us so he’d do 4 or 5 at a time.

Fried in lard in an iron skillet.
And like with pit bulls, bloodline and training matters. Those that are selectively bred for aggression and fighting are irredeemable. With training on top of that they are killing machines.
But there are still a lot of docile “nanny dogs” in the pit bull breed. The same cannot be said of fighting cocks. The breed itself is enough for them to be put down.
Well, it was kind of an old bird so it turned into chicken and dumplings I think.
Just as good!....................
