I always thought it was rooted in cultural envy over the Biblical covenant with Abraham and Moses.

If the Jews were God's chosen people, then the unchosen would naturally resent it and begin to hate the people who were chosen.

If people thought they actually were God’s children people, they’d be going against God to resent it.

But if they think they aren’t God’s chosen people, then indeed one could imagine some resentment against what they saw as baseless claims.
