In a story that they could have predicted in their own work, a science fiction magazine has asked people to stop sending stories generated by artificial intelligence in the latest sign of apps like ChatGPT gaining prominence.
Clarkesworld, an award-winning sci-fi and fantasy publication based out of New Jersey, has temporarily cut off all submissions because they've gotten too many written by AI.
The irony is not lost on the magazine, which has a robot for a mascot.
Publisher and editor-in-chief Neil Clarke cut everyone off on February 20 after he was able to tell that hundreds of stories were not written by humans.
'By the time we closed on the 20th, around noon, we had received 700 legitimate submissions and 500 machine-written ones,' Clarke told NPR.
While he would not explain how they could tell the stories were made with AI, he generally stated that the writing was obviously poor.
'It was increasing at such a rate that we figured that by the end of the month, we would have double the number of submissions we normally have,' he added.
'And that the rate it had been growing from previous months, we were concerned that we had to do something to stop it.'
Clarke notes that his magazine pays its writers, which means people are attempting to grift money for no actual writing work.
'There's a rise of side hustle culture online,' he said. 'And some people have followings that say, 'Hey, you can make some quick money with ChatGPT, and here's how, and here's a list of magazines you could submit to.' And unfortunately, we're on one of those lists.'

He adds that, as much fantasy work does, it offers a worrisome potential look to the future.
And why should it matter? How about judging a story on its merits?
However, experts have noted that ChatGPT appears to have a liberal bias and its answers are not entirely transparent, which raises doubts about its effectiveness as a search tool.
IMHO, the recent 2023 omnibus appropriations bill spending $1.7 trillion bill had to have been written by ChatGBT AI...
I will send a science fiction story to them and just change the name of the author so instead of Isaac Asimov or H. G. Wells or Jules Verne they will see my name : )

I wonder if anyone has thought to ask an AI to write a sci-fi story about an AI that submits a story to sci-fi mag.

Why would I pay you for the work of a robot? Also, this is art we are talking about. The robot is only stealing the work product of millions of other people and regurgitating it into a story. Same thing with the AI that produces images, though more noticeable: it outright steals paintings and styles and regurgitates them based on its algo. In many cases it 90-99% successfully reproduces the style of an artist, albeit with some flaws that only artists would notice (and an abundance of screwed up fingers).
The artist in question—usually some hobbyist on some art website somewhere—is made obsolete in seconds by an AI that stole his work, and for which he will never be compensated for.
This is not the way we should treat art or artists.

ChatGBT -Can someone explain what the mechanics are for a story to be written? What I mean is how much input do you need before the AI can generate a story. Thanks in advance.
Now, instead of Freepers telling those they disagree with to “go back to DU”, they’ll be saying, “ Go back to ChatGPT”
Would that be a welcome change, or just as bad as the original?

Me too! I file posts under the “Rust never sleeps” policy.
There are quite a few fan fiction sites out there — the supply is so great (not saying all of it is good - it isn’t)
but it’s amazing that anyone can get paid for fiction writing these days.
I enjoy fan fiction in some cases. I have a few fan fiction novels downloaded that were for the game Thief (PC game from 98,99, “Thief: the Dark Project” and “Thief: The Metal Age”) that were very good.
