The lesson of Napoleon and of Hitler is that if you don't conquer Russia and consolidate your control before the winter comes, you will die. And come spring, the Russians will still be there.

Nobody beats the Russian winter.

A little l'audace can be a good thing but too much l'audace gets you shipped home in a body bag.

“The German Army in fighting Russia is like an elephant attacking a host of ants. The elephant will kill thousands, perhaps even millions, of ants, but in the end their numbers will overcome him, and he will be eaten to the bone.” - Colonel Bernd Von Kleist

Now, Hitler’s mistake was not taking advantage of the general disdain of Stalin, especially in Ukraine, and try to ‘divide and conquer’ the Soviet Union.

Taking Moscow would have probably resulted in Stalin’s overthrow, and perhaps another Civil War.
