Gut bacteria are crucial for liver repair, finds study
Medical Xpress / Technical University Munich / Journal of Hepatology ^ | March 1, 2023 | Yuhan Yin et al

When parts of the liver are removed, the body can replace the missing tissue. A team of researchers has now discovered that the success of this process depends to a large extent on gut bacteria. The results of the study could help to improve the prognosis after liver surgery in case of liver cancer and other diseases.

A healthy gut microbiome consists of many types of bacteria. They play an active role in digestion. Some break down carbohydrates into short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), for example. "Liver cells need these fatty acids to grow and divide," says Prof. Klaus-Peter Janssen . "We have now succeeded in showing for the first time that gut bacteria influence the lipid metabolism in liver cells, and therefore their ability to regenerate."

The current study showed that liver regeneration also occurred in animals treated with antibiotics, but with a significant delay. In mice lacking gut bacteria, no regeneration took place. However, the researchers were able to stimulate liver regeneration by treating them with a precisely defined "microbiome starter set."

The researchers demonstrated that SCFAs provide essential building blocks for the cell membrane in liver cells. If SCFAs are not present in sufficient quantities, the cells refuse to grow and multiply. When the cells multiplied because enough fatty acids are available, the team found that an enzyme known as SCD1 was especially active. "We then investigated the processes with human liver cells and tissue samples," says Yuhan Yin, who is also a first author of the study. "SCD1 is also active in humans when the liver regenerates."

"Physicians could then examine patients' gut bacteria to determine whether conditions are favorable for surgery or whether it is better to wait for the microbiome to recover." It might also be possible to influence recovery with a certain diet.

Other studies have shown that various types of soluble and insoluble fibers can encourage the growth of bacteria that make SCFAs.

Very interesting article. I do take a multivitamin along with my other meds, but I haven’t been taking any probiotics.

Intestinal bacteria produce biotin, pantothenic acid, alpha lipoic acid, paba.

I keep hearing about all this gut stuff.

Completely anecdotal.... I LOVE fermenting everything I can. I have a closet full of fermenting pickles, veggies, sauerkraut, kimchi. beets. kvas, and any other number of probiotic lacto ferments, I love them. I feel great eating them every day.

Me too. Homemade sauerkraut rocks! My granny taught me many, many moons ago.

Only recently I dove into kimchee. I put habaneros in mine.

Many who take probiotics, overdo it...they are useful after events that deplete natural gut bacteria, but once the bacteria is replenished, it self-replicates.

Certain Gut Bacteria Tied to Lower Risk of Diabetes

Having more diverse gut bacteria (greater microbiome richness) and specifically a greater abundance of 12 types of butyrate-producing bacteria were both associated with less insulin resistance and less type 2 diabetes, in a population-based observational study from the Netherlands.

Their study also identified a dozen types of bacteria that ferment dietary fiber (undigested carbohydrates) in the gut to produce butyrate, a short-chain fatty acid, which may play a role in protection against type 2 diabetes.

More affirmation for what some of us already knew.

But one key point: Their ignorance is astounding, because it affects healing in general, not just the liver.

I think it affects day to day well being. Meat is the food highest in pantothenic acid and vegetarians are the people with highest pantothenic acid. So probably the intestine makes most of the pantothenic acid people have.

I think it affects day to day well being.

Absolutely it does. That's one of the precepts I outline in my book, along with a verbose description of the long list of threats to gut health, including tap water.

I appreciate the nod, but it’s in mid-rewrite. The gut is now its own standalone volume, encompassing all that I learned from my own health recovery, during which I resolved over 60 individual impaired health symptoms.

I wish that I could point you to a different resource in the interim, but none exist. Collectively, I expended hundreds - if not thousands - of hours researching options and fixed my gut after a determined 2-year period: 1 year of eradication of a fungal infection, 1 year of highly restrictive diet to rebuild the microbiome and heal its lining.

To state that it wasn’t easy would be an understatement.

I paused writing for far too long due to disappointing, unsatisfactory results from outreach, realizing that most people don’t want help while they bitch & moan about not having a pill (the easy route); I’m desperately trying to avoid distractions and dive back into what has become a >10-year project.

In the meantime, I’m happy to respond to any queries with my learned, opinionated version of the clusterfark of misinformation which resides online & elsewhere.

I wish I had known how many things gut flora is helpful for. For so much of my life I had ignored it due to ignorance.
